These people are self loathing freaks who have a compulsion to be something other than their miserable selves.

And that, it seems, is the issue distilled down. I probably would have phrased it differently...but...

I would love to see Sgt Friday on a Dragnet episode interact with a furry.

HAH! That was all the rage about a decade ago- probably when the furry crazy started…or maybe with the hunger games series?

This isn't any example of mainstreaming, they're a comedy duo out of Norway that got a hit with a catchy song...similar to Flight of the Conchords, Weird Al Yankovic and Tenacious D

The Fury subculture I see it as two groups:
- You're in it because you enjoy dressing up for gatherings & parties; this is right in-line with cosplaying as its all for fun & humor within an affinity group which could include some sexual play.

- You're in it because you identify with it. This encompasses all the pathologies of attempting to act & live like the animal you're dressed up as. Unlike the above which does it for fun but rarely outside of any event, this person dresses up on a daily basis or whatever calendar they're using. Their household is oriented around this identity and insists that everyone in their social circle accommodate to their 'changed needs'. These are the weird ones to keep an eye on

99% are unattractive misfits that have to be something other than their disgusting selves.

The rest are pedophiles.

I'm with Marzy.

I'm not psychologist, nor do I have extensive experience with trans people or furries, but the ones I have encountered seem to come from miserable home situations and typically exhibit other mental health or behavioral problems in addition to their gender or animal obsession. For those people, I really think that in their broken minds it's a way to escape their miserable reality, as they've never developed the coping skills to deal with the real world.

I've also seen a lot of kids who are so engrossed in video games and the alternate realities that they create that they can't differentiate them from the real world. I'm not talking about kids who play a lot of video games...I mean kids who legitimately live in the game. Like if you have a conversation with them they can't express themselves in a real world manner, or carry on a conversation about anything outside of their game universe. If you allow someone to become that out of touch with reality, it's not a huge jump for them to get to a place where they think they're a different gender or species. Especially if they're being pushed that way by other outside influences, or somehow dissatisfied with the life they currently live.

Coworker's opinion on it, when the subject of similar issues in schools. Shockingly, in a very conservative county/area outside Houston.
Our schools don't teach animals, get out.

I've dealt with this in our local schools, but opinion doesn't matter. School policy does.

Our district has a policy that addresses manner of dress, which although not being enforced would ordinarily prevent kids from dressing like animals.

Our district has a policy against disruptive behavior, which although not being enforced would ordinarily prevent kids from acting like animals.

And the cherry on top. For the true believers, our district has a policy against animals in school unless there for approved educational purposes or certified service animals.

In middle school my son had a class with a girl who fancied herself a cat. She hissed at others, including him, while making scratching motions. One day I sent him to school with a squirt bottle and instructed him to aim for her face the next time she pawed at him. If she wanted to act like a cat, she'd get treated like one. Seemed to work.

I have noticed that most actors seem to submit themselves to therapy from the terrible trauma of their chosen profession. Perhaps pretending to be someone or something you are not on a regular basis should require mandatory psychological evaluation and treatment up to and including extended confinement if deemed necessary. That might thin the herd (actors, trans and furries) a bit.
