Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas is charged with drug trafficking and money laundering, DOJ says
Federal prosecutors say the scheme used business entities to hide marijuana proceeds and that Lucas used her state senate position to shield it from scrutiny.

On Thursday, federal authorities charged Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas with racketeering and money laundering conspiracy involving a cannabis business she co-owns, according to the Department of Justice.
The investigation into the 82-year-old Lucas predates the current administration, stemming from a May FBI search of her Portsmouth office and The Cannabis Outlet, where authorities allege she used her political position to insulate the business.
FBI Director Kash Patel alleged Lucas and her relatives orchestrated a scheme to enrich their "criminal marijuana enterprise," while an intercepted February 2026 phone call captured Lucas saying this was their "last chance at generational wealth."
Lucas, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, previously characterized the search as intimidation, while Democrats expressed skepticism about the Justice Department's case, citing efforts to target perceived political opponents.
Legal proceedings continue for Lucas and six other defendants charged in the alleged scheme, while Virginia state legislators have agreed to allow licensed recreational marijuana retail sales beginning July 1, 2027.

I just read this at the gym while I was walking on the treadmill.

My first thought: The first time I drove a Hummer/H1 was owned by her.

Actually, I met her in January of 2002, while I was working the inauguration for Gov. Mark Warner.

At my first agency (2002 to 2004), we were charged with being the escort drivers for the Senators during General Assembly, Special Sessions, events etc. If they stayed in town, we would pick/drop them off at hotels, restaurants, airport, venues, etc.

I will say this, she always treated us great: no matter the hour, day, who was around, etc.

So, it is disappointing/sad for me to read this.

I haven't posted anything negative about Ms. Spanberger in a bit; I'll call this news a good substitute.

Also on FoxNews.

Politicians seem to have forgotten that they work for us, not the other way around.

I'm not very familiar with Virginia state politics so I looked her up.
  • She isn't merely a state senator, she has been President pro tempore (i.e. most powerful position in VA senate) since 2020.
  • Has been a VA senator since 1992
  • Unsurprised that someone who set-up racketeering levels of graft is a Democrat

Left or right, any politician who desires to stay in power for so long can only be a scumbag. Been a senator since 1991. Thirty five years, leeching off taxpayers, making laws for the peasants that don’t apply to them while enriching themselves. Mad

Here's the reality of such matters: "Innocent until proven guilty" is a legal standard, and it is an abstraction which does not reflect the manner in which humans innately make quick judgements (as a survival mechanism).

"Innocent until..." is a necessary standard because it places the burden of proof upon the state, rather than the individual, thus compensating for the extreme imbalance of power between those two entities.

Furthermore, "the state" is comprised not only of codified laws, but of human beings who are subject to the nature of Man, whether in the courtroom or outside of it and therefore, the system can never perfectly apply "Innocent until proven guilty". Judge, prosecutors, attorneys, juries, the press and the public- all human and all applying value judgements internally, and nothing can change that.

People who have at least some knowledge of these accusations against this woman, have, for the most part, already made up their mind.

I certainly know I have, and that gal is guilty ten ways from Sunday, and I have no doubt that she's guilty of further crimes, of which the state has no knowledge.

Guilty as sin. After all, she's a Democrat in power, and that's all it takes.

“Innocent until proven guilty” is the usual way it’s expressed, but it should be stated the proper way which is “Not guilty—i.e., not legally culpable—until proved guilty.” Once they have committed the offense they are no longer innocent. A judge or jury must comply with certain formal legal requirements, some of which are very artificial and even illogical, but that does not apply to the rest of us. Might I turn out to be wrong about someone’s innocence? Certainly, but that possibility does not oblige me to avoid drawing reasonable conclusions until then.
