Got to see it from afar, down at the Konigsee April of 2012. The peak where the building is was still snowbound and I viewed it through one of those tourist telescopes.

There sure seems to be a whole lot of historic buildings burning to the ground in Europe these days. Odd that. ________________________________________________________ It is long past time for a Convention of States. Yes odd, it's not like the Eagle's Nest is on the way to anywhere. Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

Article said they caught a motorcyclist coming down the mountain and lots of people in the comments are speculating it was left/antifa motivated. Supposedly 31st of October is going to be big protest/riot.

Very crazy. When we visited, 12 or so years ago, seems like not much that would burn. Yes there was a limited restaurant up there, snack shop of sorts. One was able to walk around, no real security, with intent an arsonist could cause problems. I remember reading about the debate of destroying it after WW2. The truth is, Hitler hardly went there, they decided to keep it. Hopefully if it was arson, the perp is nabbed and prosecuted. Suspect apprehended. https://news.sky.com/story/sus...ain-retreat-13602938

Sorry to hear about the fire. Visited in 2009 - it was well maintained and you could feel the history as you walked about the grounds. Amazing views of the Alps from the patio.

Antifa? I always figured they loved that fascist. The Left? Heck, our Lame Stream Media took Goebbel's manual on journalism to heart. Gotta be someone else.

Königsee in the background, lower left. There is a little resort town down there. That is where we viewed the structure through a telescope.

What a loss! I visited the Nest and enjoyed a bier there in 1988 while staying at the Berchtesgadener Hof hotel with my family ( I hear thats been torn down too.) The Berchtesgaden Recreation Center is gone, it was turned over to Germany in 1995 and most (all?) the buildings are gone. I stayed there in 1985 or 86, though not at the General Walker hotel. I returned in 2023, it's now the departure point for visiting the Eagles's Nest. Well, maybe not anymore. On/near the site of the General Walker is a museum called a Documentation Center. For me the highlight was walking thru the restored underground bunker complex. https://obersalzberg.de/en/besuch/

My father and I spent a week driving around Germany about ten years ago. That included a night in Berchtesgaden and we made the trip up to the Eagles Nest. As a WWII vet, he was not going to pass that up. This was him rocking his Navy hat in the beer garden outside the Eagles Nest. ___________________________ "Opinions vary" -Dalton

A great photo — BZ! Thought you might enjoy this. As naval tradition, the first or commissioning crew of a ship choose the radio call sign, their ship will employ for her life. This topic takes me back well over a decade now and my time as a USN Commander leading a select cadre of literal, ground breaking Sailors at the Pacific Missile Range Facility, PMRF, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Aegis Ashore was effectively a USN Ballistic Missile Defense Destroyer (BMD)without the propulsion plant. As the inaugural crew, we selected PACIFIC SENTINEL for the call sign to be used in our missile firings, space tracking, and other events — bearing in mind that the concept of Aegis Ashore was still controversial, I believed it was a great choice by my Sailors that highlighted the defensive nature of the weapon system with its very naming convention. Prior to PACIFIC SENTINEL, the leading contender was EAGLE’S NEST — which was my favored candidate as a true honorific to the BMD mission and the SM3 missile that Aegis Ashore fired into Low Earth Orbit to intercept Ballistic Missiles. I, however, felt compelled to veto this nomination due to the historical linkage of EAGLE’s NEST to Hitler in Europe and the fact we were building a second Aegis Ashore site in Romania with a third ordered that would be constructed in Poland. So for a further bit of context “EAGLE” was/is the word that Sailors use to identify the SM3 (Ballistic Missile Interceptor) during engagements. If you are familiar with air to air engagements, you have undoubtedly heard, “FOX 1” or “FOX 3” to distinguish between the missile being fired. From a ship or Aegis Ashore, “EAGLE” versus “BIRD” differentiates a guided missile (interceptor) fired against a Ballistic Missile or manned aircraft or anti ship missile. Similarly, from ships, we use other descriptors to distinguish between torpedoes and Tomahawk Cruise missiles, for instance. Therefore, over the radio, in order to report and maintain a sense of brevity during an engagement one might hear, “OUTRIDER this is PACIFIC SENTINEL, EAGLE away track 85461.” This report would tell everyone on the circuit that Aegis Ashore had fired a SM3 interceptor against an inbound Ballistic Missile, Track 85461. In a rather ironic and sublime twist, almost 15 years before that, I had first published “EAGLE” as the SM3’s unofficial designation. As a senior Lieutenant (an oxymoron, because that really meant I was a junior officer having been in the navy about 8 years) I was the Operations Officer assigned to the Cruiser that was the only ship in the world capable of engaging ballistic missiles. That is to say, we had done it exactly once previously…and we were getting ready to repeat this event — so we hoped! My Commanding Officer, a true visionary, tasked me with constructing a scenario to overlay on top of the second very scripted test that imparted a sense of realism with joint command and control, reports, prowords, etc to “normalize” something that only we had done once before. Using some literary license I assigned the word EAGLE to the SM3. To my eager Junior Officer sense of propriety and history, EAGLE was perfect — it served two purposes. (1) It was a bigger, bad ass upgrade to Air Defense and the proword for the legacy Air Defense interceptor, BIRD, and (2) a fitting homage to our first, historic intercept mission which had been identified as STELLAR EAGLE. Now, in these early days immediately following September 11, 2001 and the years that followed, Ballistic Missile Defense was not universally accepted or acknowledged as a core navy mission and by many accounts, we, the first voyagers, into this unknown voodoo were considered naval heretics. So this “operational overlay” was both important as it was extremely visible to the absolute highest levels of DOD and also somewhat controversial within the navy…”Don’t screw it up OPS!” was pretty clear guidance! Moving forward, during pier side rehearsal, missile onload, underway movement and campaign execution the Operational Overly synchronized with our intercept test. A vignette of notional C2 and actual voice and message reports to include “EAGLE” played out, a second ballistic missile was shot down in space by our ship, and well the rest is now history. Ultimately like BMD from the sea, EAGLE successfully fledged and flew the coup so to speak. I have other great memories of “breaking new ground” as a naval officer and shooting shit down in Low Earth Orbit, but THAT is how it ties into Eagle’s Nest! A bit of naval BMD trivia as a landmark in Europe burns. This message has been edited. Last edited by: KP93, Navy BMD: When "Aim High" isn't High Enough!
