My wife is looking for a stand-alone vhs player with a built-in screen.

I see similar things for DVD / BluRay, but I can't find one for VHS.

Anybody know where to find one? New or used, as long as it works.
Edit to add:

Is there some way to use an iPad as the display for a stand-alone VHS player?

This is going to be tough, so good luck. That being said, I would really like to know why you want such a thing. Home video recordings?

That's not something that is going to still be in production nowadays.

You'd need to check eBay, thrift stores, or swap meets, and hope that you can find one that is still working after several decades.

Assuming you don't find one, V-Tail, some years back we found a local shop that would copy our VHS tapes onto DVD's. I don't remember it being expensive.

Good answer, we found a service and had all our old home 8mm movies from 70s and 80s transferred to digital DVD. I need to do the same thing for a couple of VHS home videos I have.

The only thing you're going to find is this from a thrift store or eBay:

I doubt any kind of modern portable VHS player with a built in flat screen like the DVD units even exists.

My mom used to have a large collection of VHS Asian dramas. With VCR no longer being made, it was to replace her VCRs and her preference of TV with built in VCR since it was less complicated for her to start playing a tape. The VCR components are the first to go bad, mostly due to needing cleaning and adjustment. Make sure the VCR can play a tape w/o chewing it up or have tracking error.

Yep, FB or eBay likely only choices. DVD would be hard, VHS will be virtually impossible.

There are SO many better pathways, but we'll assume she has a very specific need that can't be reasoned with.

I was going to say the same thing. I had one just like that; built a little stand to hold it and angle it up for the kids in the back of the old Chrysler mini-van, circa 1997 or so.

As far as I know, you can't use your iPad as an external display, unless you're using it to extend/mirror the screen of another Apple device, such as an iPhone or Mac. Even then, it depends on the age of the Apple devices involved, and/or the software they are running.

A VCR can be found on eBay (the best place in my experience, even though I really dislike them as a company). You can use one of the two adapters below (depending on the outputs the VCR has) to hook up the VCR to a modern TV with HDMI.

If it's memories, why not do legacy box or similar service? Then it's digitized and can be passed down. I'm not sure if it's worth it for rewatching The Young & Restless though.

Ebay was the only source for a replacement monitor for the back-up camera in my daughter's 30-year old RV. Only one listed and she jumped on it, and it works great! As much as I despise Ebay these days, they ARE a great source for old things long out of production!

I had one of those. Threw it in the trash circa 2010.

Facebook Marketplace is loaded with them near me if you have access to Facebook. I still have the capability to play Beta tapes I made years ago as well as VHS and DVD's. I'm watching "Midway" VHS with the late great Charlton Heston while tread milling daily.

Don’t forget to check craig’s list.

Understand it can get a bad rap however, i have been looking for a couple multi CD players (one for garage and one for house) and CL was the only place i could find one … which i could see/hear tested

Is there a reason why she can't use a VHS player jacked in to a TV you already own? Not a difficult connection and not hard to use. Any old combo you find will be a very small screen and probably not great sound as well as being old and probably not repairable when it breaks.
