Hard to imagine a better home for this one to have landed in.

Good on you Mars. My grandmother raised parakeets, love birds, finches, cockatiels, and had a cockatoo that my mother inherited. That bird could sing Patsy Montana’s 1935 song “I want to be cowboy’s sweetheart”. My grandmother played that song to the bird over and over on a cassette. Your bird posts bring back a thousand good memories.

Mars, Texas A&M has a endowed facility for exotic birds where they can go after their owners pass and live out their lives in comfort. I read on the alumni magazine a couple years ago that an alum donated funds for this facility for her birds to go to after she could no longer care for them. Supposed to be an amazing facility. A&M had a Vet school and this facility is associated with the vet school so the birds are cared for by experts. Not a research facility either with these birds.

You might look into it as a option for your birds when that time comes as you say.

Beautiful story, made my day reading this!

God-Bless you for giving that bird a home. They are very special creatures and require more care and understanding than most people can provide.

I share my home with 3 umbrella Cockatoos, and 3 Amazons. All have different personalities, but all want my time and attention. Most were rescues with varying levels of socialization, but they ALL respond to love and kindness.

Please keep us posted on your new flock-member's progress.

Cheers,

HO-LEE SHIT!!!!!

My one Citron is an air raid siren, I can only imagine THREE Umbrellas!

Roxy's species is critically endangered such to the point that domestic breeding is the only thing keeping the population stable. However, those breeding pairs are going to be too old to breed soon and I will be one of the caretakers of the last of her kind.

Within my lifetime their wings no longer grace the skies when the last one calls for a mate that never comes.

Yes, you are correct. I am completely insane.

Smile

I am fortunate that only one of the Cockatoos is a "screamer" - and she only goes off occasionally. I live out in the country so no neighbors to complain.

My oldest bird is at least 50+ years old, a Mexican Red-Head Amazon (also known as a Green Cheek Amazon). Sadly they are also on the endangered species list. He doesn't like any of the other birds or humans, just me. He is moving slow nowadays, like an old man. An old curmudgeonly man.

He has been with me for almost 30 years.

My ex-wife (who he disliked, I should have listened to him!) once tried to tell me that "I needed to get rid of that bird!"

Without missing a beat I calmly looked at her and said "I had him long before you....and I will have him long after your gone."

And wouldn't you know, that is EXACTLY how it worked out. I couldn't be happier!

Cheers,

This is awesome, Mars. It takes a very special, dedicated person to commit to sharing their lives with a bird.

One of the first things we did when we bought the pet store was to discontinue the selling of these special critters. It didn’t seem right to sell a bird to anyone that wanted to buy one. Not trying to be judgmental but we just didn’t want anything to do with it.

I agree. A bird takes truly a special kind of person.

Pippin has settled right in. He knows when dinner is served, he can go eat with Tabitha and he can have anything he wants.

He has night terrors and Tabs has to go and soothe him. He must dream of something really bad that happened to him. He has done it while sleeping in her lap.

Her son reminds him of someone that he loved in his past as he will just talk away for Michael. He lets Michael pet him and get near him.
