Anyone else ever have this happen?

Say you have a item that's perhaps getting a bit worn or falling apart or otherwise possibly in need of a upgrade. So you start looking around for a replacement, and in that search you find yourself "needing" to buy more/other items to.... make proper use of??... that new item.

My current case as a example.

My mouse is getting old. It's a Logitech G502SE Hero and I really can't remember anymore how long I have had it. It's a good mouse and I have been very happy with it. I have disassembled and cleaned it a couple times over the years, and even replaced the switches once already a few years ago. It's starting to act up again so I thought, maybe it's just time for something new.

Looking around and I can still buy the same one for around $45. BUT maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade? So looking more and the upgrade would be a G502X plus for $130. And it's wireless. Ok so it's a bit more expensive, and my past experiences with wireless mice has not been the greatest... BUT...

Logitech also makes a fancy mouse pad that has built in wireless charging and wireless hub, witch eliminates both of the issues I have run into, poor signal and constantly dead batteries. Cool... That's another $120, except the new version of the pad no longer has the hub built in, bummer. But I can still get the older version on Ebay for the same price.

Now the other issue. I have very limited desk space and the new pad will not fit on my desk because the stands for my monitors are rather large and eat up most of the depth of my "desk" area. Which means I now also need to buy a desk mount dual monitor stand, that's another $50ish.

So the grand total just to upgrade my mouse would be a bit over $300. Yeah I guess I don't really need to upgrade that bad.

Somehow, your post reminded me of this. Of course, you have to be old enough to know that the original computer mice were mechanical.

I use a cheap wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse combo for $22 (current price). Link

I fail to see any advantage to fancier stuff unless you need those anti-carpal set up. I spend my upgrade money on the laptop itself. The only thing I won’t upgrade is laptop screen size because I have 3 portable monitors I use to extend the screen and they’re 15.6”. It drove me crazy adjusting screen resolutions when I tried a 17” laptop screen.

Desk and chair and mounts to adjust the screens’ vertical position is a high priority for me to minimize fatigue and long term muscle issues.

I need the chair seat’s height, arm rest level, table height, and monitor mounts to all work together so that my knees are approximately 90 degrees when I’m sitting, my elbows are 90 degrees with my arms level to the keyboard, and the top of the screens just close to level with my eyes staring ahead. That way, I can also look at the TV screen whose bottom edge is just above my computer screens.

I have the battery powered logitech mouse, it takes on AA battery and lasts at least 6 months of good use. I have the battery keyboard and have yet to replace the batteries in that in over a year. So I think you'd be good with the less expensive ones.
