That's a big one, but I have to say that these tsunami warnings are getting a bit ridiculous. How many times are they going to cry wolf before people just don't give a shit anymore? (If they ever did). Nowadays, if somebody farts in the Philippines they issue a tsunami warning for the entire Pacific Ocean.

Largest earthquake since the tsunami in Japan. Even Trump tweeted the warning out.

BTW, this one is 25x bigger and has 126x more energy than last week's 7.3 that resulted in a nothing burger tsunami warning.

Prayers if you can for my son and daughter in law. Their house is right on the water in Hawaii. They are evacuating to higher ground right now.

It’s good and bad.
It will either lull people into believing that everyone is bullshit, then there’s the small minority who actually will believe the sky is falling every time. Then again, listening to damn near any weather-person on TV, the sky is always falling.

I have 3 family members over in the Hawaiian Islands right now.

My Brother is in Lahaina working for a company that is permitting and inspections for the new homes being built there after the fire. He went up the hill to a new friends house.

My niece and her son are on Kawaii Island with her friends family. She’s about 6 miles from the beach, so they should be safe if the Tsunami actually comes.

I understand what you mean. I was in San Francisco when they gave a tsunami warning from some earthquake in the mid 80s and people were standing in the beach looking for it.

But how soon can people tell when the warning has some teeth? I imagine it should be at some point closest to the epicenter, right? So the rest of the shores will get a heads up.

We got a call from our son and daughter-in-law IN MARYLAND making sure we had heard the warning.
I just checked Hawaiinewsnow.com, I knew they would have better info. They have livecams, it’s constant tsunami. Local tsunami expert just came on and said it will probably be about 1.5 feet above normal, they will likely downgrade to an advisory.
West coast will see nuttin.

Huge earthquake is the main reason I keep my guns loaded and ready for civil unrest. Knock out infrastructure for a few days, shit can get hairy. Unfortunately in Southern California, it’s more likely than the zombie apocalypse or other near end scenarios.

One of my best friends lives in Kihei. He spent the night up country (Up towards Haleakala around Makawao) at the skate park where there is a community center, shower, and bathrooms. He slept in his car. I last heard from him at 7pm his time (12am here) and waiting to hear from him. Probably still asleep in his car as it’s 4:03am there right now. Should be all well.

This happens often in the summers. Tsunami, or Hurricane and most of the time, it passes by.
I go a lot and purposely don’t go this time of year as I don’t want to deal with it. Most of the big storms off the Pacific, if they even hit the islands, most of the time will hit the south face of Big Island which pushes the storm around Maui. If an Island is going to get hit, it’s usual Kauai. Big Island tends to take the brunt and force the storm east/west and around Maui, Molokai, and even Oahu. Kauai gets it bad some years. Mudslides, flooding. So don’t plan your trip in July or August.

My wife lived in Petropavlovsk with her uncle & cousins for a year when she was 18 years old. She said the ground shook often but never was any damage during the time she there. Her cousins still live in Petropavlovsk but she has not had any contact with them in many years.

So, what happened? What if any damage and destruction, or was it all a big nothing burger again? It been 12+ hours, so something should be known by now.
