Does anyone else use that high density polyethylene foam that you sometimes find used in box packaging? It’s like a pool noodle in sheet form.
I have a section of that stuff I use to lay down on and it’s 10x better than that crappy gym mat shit they sell for kneeling mats at home centers and garden supply houses. That junk eventually crumbles into dust. Non absorbent, chemical resistant, waterproof, washable, supposedly it’s even dishwasher safe (unless your wife finds out).
Maybe its durability is the reason nobody sells it for garage mats. They’d only make 1 or 2 sales in a lifetime.

No...If a creeper doesn't work for a particular under-car activity/repair maneuver, I just throw down cardboard. I keep a variety of under-car cardboard 'inventory' actually, to include at least one specifically for placing/keeping in-use tools within reach, which has a folded lip to prevent things (like 10mm Sockets!) from rolling away. When I'm done I can just slide the tools out from under the car all at once and commence wiping them down to return them to their proper location.

Big piece of cardboard to keep the grime off. I am my own padding.

There are a couple of beefs I have with creepers. Those with metal wheels get stopped cold on the tiniest obstacle, for example little pebbles or cracks or expansion joints in the floor. If you don't have power tools and need to break a bolt loose, the creeper rolls away in the opposite direction.

I have a nice creeper that I rarely use for the reasons pointed out by egregore. Typically, I just use cardboard. It's thinner, slides easier, helps soak up the mess, and it's disposable.
