Shoot a P-220 chambered for the .38 Super. It will make you feel young again. Smile

I turned 46 in Dec.
I hate that fact because I can still dust half the guys in my Reserve unit and also when I go to the PT test for the PDs.

It really sucks when half the Depts up North or the Feds have a 32 to 44 year old cut off.

Me and my father was talking about it two years ago. He turned 70 and he is not dealing with being old very well and he said so straight out.

I guess that's why I keep volunteering for Deployments/going on Active Duty orders because in that arena I am never looked at as too old or that I am old. I get teased but that is all.

I'd agree, except that 48 isn't that old. At 59, sure, I have some issues that I didn't earlier, but I don't believe myself to be old. I work as hard as the younger guys in my shop, save that I can't lift some of the larger/heavier truck tires. One of them remarked that he had never seen me miss any work.

My P220 beat me to death. It wore me out. It battered my hands. Jarred my wrists. Made my elbows ache. Broke my support hand grip on every shot. It recoils so much harder than my TRP and Shield .45.

I wonder why the P220 would have more felt or perceived recoil than the smaller and lighter Shield.

I know! It's the strangest thing...I don't know how S&W's engineers did it, but it recoils LESS than my P220. You must shoot one. Incredible!

A change for the better nutrition-wise would probably have a huge impact. I'm only 43, but like mrapteam666 said above; I'm leaving my much younger NCOs in the dust when it comes to PT, they are all infantry as well. My MSG is 2 years older than me, literally looks like CPT America, I tied him on our last APFT (we both scored 300, I got 1 more push up, a number more sit ups, he beat me by about 100-200yds on the 2mi run)

Sure, exercise (and hopefully efficient, balanced, and intense), but dialing in my nutrition is what dropped 19lbs of fat over the summer/fall and has everyone commenting how much younger I look.

No, I don't miss my former favorite comfort food (nachos), still enjoy micro-brews and whiskey in moderation and eat all the smoked meats I want. I also make a decent low carb cheese cake!

It's funny when I think about how old I am. I can still do things I did about 15 years ago but I have to think about how sore I am going to be afterwards. I remember wishing when I was in my early teens, that I would get older quicker and now I want it to slow down. 50 is knocking on my door now and I realize how fast it went.

Shoot, you are not old at all. I'll be 71 on my next birthday and also have a P220. I think it shoots just fine. If you are having problems try reloading some loads dialed back a bit, it will make a difference.

Recently turned 61 here. In my youth I rode motorcycles, jumped out of perfectly good airplanes, got shot and stabbed (they ended up worse than me), had a heart attack at 47. Still ride, still shoot, hike the mountains and generally take care of myself. My eyesight isn't what it was but thankfully those pistol sights with the bright orange ring really work and the red dots are great on the ARs.

Have two great sons, now have two wonderful grandsons. Yeah, things hurt now and then (more now than then lol). I make the same noises my late dad made and laugh about it.

I told my sons I have a time machine, it's in the garage and looks a lot like a motorcycle-I loose 30 years every time I hop on for a ride.

The 1911 is still my preferred pistol, just picked up a Colt Wiley Clapp CCO and while it kicks a wee bit more than the steel framed 5" Baers it's not a big deal.

Hang in there, hopefully you have a long way to go.

tonight I too rant, rant against the dying of the light.

Sounds like you have Patrick Stewart syndrome.

As I get older, few things I notice about my body:
I'm not crazy about the hair loss, but I knew it was in the genetic cards I was dealt.

My night vision is gradually deteriorating. I now understand why so many people over 65 have to give up driving at night altogether.

I played my fair share of contact sports, emphasis on the past tense. The concept of ppl hitting me has about lost all its appeal. On one hand, it makes me feel less tough than I used to be. On the other hand, I have come to accept that any injury I sustain takes a lot longer than it used to to heal. Another consideration is the older I get, the less likely any injury I sustain will heal back 100%.

Going to a buffet and eating all-I-can-eat is a lot less enjoyable than I remember it.

^^^+1 You aren't old at 48. You should just be getting warmed up.

I will be 84 next month (February 12). I am not in perfect health but I am managing quite well.
I shot a 100 rounds of 230gr hardball in my 220 the other day and I decided that I really don't like hardball. It's not a particularly good defense load, nor is it accurate. But shooting it certainly didn't end my day at the range, nor did I limp out of the joint.

I dunno. I'm closing in on 66.

I posted about buying a .40 Shield and was told that I would hate the "shock" and recoil from it and that a 9mm would be better. I had to be obstante and get the .40. A little snappy but not too bad. And the slide actually seems to rack a bit easier than my P-232.

Yea, as I get older recoil bothers me more. And I enjoy shooting rifles more, because I love to use the optics so I can see better!

I'm in my late 50s and I consider myself on the old side now, basically starting the 4th quarter right now. But at 48 yo, I considered myself still young. I was still biking, not as grey as now, eyesight was better, etc. But at 50, I decided to get into the best shape of my life and started P90x, stuck with it for years. At 50, I was in better shape and stronger than in my 30s, and back then, I was doing 10-20 mile mountain bike rides twice a week. At 50, I was at my college weight, my muscle cage way more defined, etc. I felt young.

Now, time is fighting back, even though I'm still in good shape, mainly the eyes. But I have picked up shooting 1911s a couple of years ago, having been a 9mm guy for decades. .45acp is my favorite handgun caliber right now. Recoil is fine Smile
