Everyday is see, read and hear about "innocent people" getting shot, sometimes multiple times. After today's errands , I gotta wonder just how innocent these people are. Nothing occured today that would come close to to deserve violence, not even close. But the rude, anti social and tempestuous behavior of three separate people got me wondering. What percentage of those claiming to be innocent, really are. 75 y.o. women, 29 y.o. guy and a 60ish y.o. guy. In only 2 hours of errands. Anyone of those might have been all it took for a nut job to go enraged . I get the hell out of the way, But one of these days, One of these days these three might very well be in the news for picking the wrong stranger to interact with. Back before cellphones and cameras everywhere some of the assholes would have some fear of having the error of their ways explained in memorable terms by a tough guy here and there. “That’s what.” - She

Agreed. So many rude people out there just waiting for the opportunity to get mad about something. It’s getting unnerving. When I smile and say excuse me (at the grocery, for example) if I have to move past them, more often than not, I’ll just get a look..not a “no problem”, or a smile back, just a look, like I might’ve just ruined their day. When someone IS genuinely and overtly nice, I really take note, because it’s just becoming that uncommon. Courtesy is disappearing. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

On a similar thread, someone posted whenever confronted by an aggressive/risk taking driver, they back off, avoid confrontation. I’m trying to emulate this, but, God! It’s hard! So many assholes out there! P226 9mm CT Springfield custom 1911 hardball Glock 21 Les Baer Special Tactical AR-15

Down With The Sickness |
A number of years ago we attended an NBA game because our friends daughter was part of the halftime show. Anyway there was a fan of the opposing team trash talking the entire section because his team was winning. Security removed him because you could really feel the growing tension in the air. Now when a hear about someone getting beat up at a sporting event I do wonder how much of a role did they play?

I had a friend that did his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at a big city hospital. Saturday nights were always busy fixing broken jaws, facial lacerations, etc. He said they often joked about having the top line of the admission form pre-printed to read: "I was just minding my own business..."

Common courtesy isn’t as common as it used to be. A while back a family group was completely blocking the aisle in Walmart trying to decide on items on the shelf. I pushed my cart through and bumped theirs because I had no choice in the matter and was rewarded with an “excuse you!” with more than a touch of attitude. 30 years in law enforcement has made me as dead pan as a brick wall and I calmly replied “you’re blocking the aisle, not me”. They seemed like they were spoiling for a confrontation as a matter of course but didn’t say another word. I suspect a person with a mousy demeanor would have incurred further invective. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

I wonder if Covid lockdown magic has been, not making this behavior but magnifying it? I think people were in their little bubbles of acceptable behavior and then don't know how to or don't want to adjust now that the world around them has returned. Not science, just my observations. I have noticed an extreme self-centeredness and over-the-top almost internet-worthy out loud commentary from people of varying ages. It reminds me of the majority of homeschooled folks I've ran into. Some are awesome so I'm not beating up on the concept but I've observed a strong lack of self-awareness and manners as most do not seem to be used to someone else being there or someone else having a contrary opinion or laying you out if you said something offensive.

Interesting observation. I hadn’t considered the comparison, but you may have a point. I wonder how things are going in Japan, for example, where folks can be really crowded..if they’re noticing an overall increase in the level of inconsiderate behavior, given the extreme politeness I encountered when visiting years ago. __________________________ "Trust, but verify."

Have a buddy who just might get a knuckle sandwich across the chops if he runs his cake hole someday to/at the wrong person. Thought he learned his lesson some years ago when he mouthed off to a plain clothes cop he cut off in traffic one day. I think he narrowly avoided a day in the clink on that one… "If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Winters (1918-2011), E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

No More Mr. Nice Guy |
Society has been moving quickly towards isolation. People walk with earbuds in. Passengers on an airliner pull down the window shade, plug in earphones, and play games or watch shows on the little screen in front of them. Young people sequester themselves alone in a room to engage in computer games. People on public transportation have earbuds in and are looking down at their phones. Nobody interacts if they can avoid it. Add to that the increasing level of uncivil discourse on the internet and we have a population that only knows how to interact in angry ways.

Fuses seem to be shorter all the way around. So if short fuse meets short fuse and something rather benign happens to set one off against the other there are going to be bad results. That doesn't justify it.

I had a pleasant experience last week. Visited a town NE of Sacramento where our granddaughter goes to school. Went to the library wearing my "Make Orwell Fiction Again" T-shirt. A lady in a car stopped, called to me, and told me "Your T-shirt is awesome! If only, huh?" She appeared to be Asian. Shortly thereafter we went for coffee. At the coffee shop another stranger commented on how great my T-shirt was. I told him I wanted to move into his neighborhood. And they have a conservative Republican congressman. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"
