Salvador Dali museum in St. Pete is worth a visit, and the Devil Rays have a busy Spring Training Schedule if your family is into either of those.

I don't know if it's still open but the Ringling Bros. estate in Sarasota is definitely worth seeing as well. It is still open

Busch Gardens is also well worth seeing, even if you don't like amusement park rides, the wildlife/zoo part of it is awesome.

Anna Maria island. Beautiful place.
I spend time at the boattrash there every other year. Spent 2 months there in May, June 2016.
Great local restaurants, no high rises and beautiful beaches on the gulf and Tampa bay.
You'll want to rent a house. Motel options are limited, all mom and pop hotels.
DO NOT SPEED on Anna Maria and make sure you are parked properly.
