Oh yes. My folks would give me a flashlight and send me off to the basement to put in a new fuse.

I thought they were to be replaced with pennies?

At least until there was money to buy more fuses.

We always kept several pennies in the box

The colors are for amperage. Blue = 15a, orange = 20a. Only lived in one house ever that had a fuse box. Pretty rare nowadays, I hardly find them in homes anymore.

Got a bunch sitting in my "odds and ends" box in the garage, just in case.

Yeah. Heck, the same house was heated by coal until dad changed out the furnace to gas. There was a steel door at ground level in the side of the house for the coal room. Dad converted that room into his workshop after the heating system was changed.

When we sold the in-laws house, I took all their fuses and we had our panel replaced last year so I still have a box of fuses.

Very much so. The first three homes of my youth had them, but I remember them best from my grandparents' home. It was originally a dogtrot-style cut-log cabin from the late 1840s to 1850. My great grandfather was born there in 1851 and later converted it to a two story farmhouse with clapboard siding in around 1908-10. My grandfather wired it in the early 1950s, and then installed plumbing and an indoor bathroom at about the same time. I replaced fuses for my grandmother on any number of occasions in the 70s since the fuse box only had four 15(?) amp fuses.

ON of my first apartments was a 3rd floor in an old building and the landlord was very open and direct about the electric system....My GF was a poor listener and would plug in a blow dryer and curling iron at the same time resulting in me running down 3 flights of stairs then outside and in the basement to change one of these

I had those in a place I rented in Newton Mass. The box was in the darkest, most spidered up corner of the basement. Almost no light. Many of the fuses were ceramic bodied, not glass with copper. The ceramic would break off in the threads of the socket, so the new fuse would not screw in. I had an old tooth brush (plastic, doesn't conduct zot) on top of the box that I would use to clean out the threads before I tried to screw the new one in.

Don't miss that...
