The only piece of NorthFace gear I ever bought was in the late 1990s- a pair of lightweight water-resistant gloves. I still have them and use them. I imagine NF was a different company then.

I have never bought a NF product, but was gifted a ski parka 15+ years ago. I never wear it except when I'm...well...you know...skiing. Haven't been in YEARS and don't see going anytime soon. So that jacket can hang in my closet and get moth-riddled for all I care.

I'm somewhat close to this, very curious that a company that just reported 3qtr losses (both TNF and parent company VF), had a third round of lay-offs in as many years ( 2022 , Dec'23 & Jan'24) and is looking to sell its backpack brands... that this 'campaign' got the green-light.

I have a North Face parka that I purchased back in 1975, when you still had to go to an outdoors store, in my case Backwoods, to purchase one. You couldn't give me one today.

My wife has some North Face gear of which she is very fond; but they don’t seem to make those styles any more.
I doubt I could ever get her to buy a North Face item ever again; and will be happy if she doesn’t burn the ones she has in front of the North Face headquarters in Berkeley. I bought a parka/jacket with a liner about 10 to 15 years ago and I still wear either or both depending on the temperature. They are nice. I won't be buying anything more from them for sure.

If I take a "White Privilege" test I will get a 20% "White Privilege Discount". Is it a one time thing, or permanent? Can I get another 20% for being part of "The Patriarchy", or something?

On a similar vein, I'm wondering if my white privilege discount be combined with my GF's (1st generation born in America) discount? Her parents had an abundance of outdoor "privilege" (e.g. no air conditioning) in their home country.

They stepped on their collective dicks about a couple of years ago here in Alaska. An oil and gas company wanted parkas embroidered with their company logo. North Face refused stating that fossil fuels did not reflect their corporate values. They had no answer when asked about petroleum products being used in the manufacture of their synthetic materials.

You can't get one at all unless you live in Europe .

I remember when they used to make legitimate, well-designed outdoor equipment. Clothing was actually a pretty late addition, I think. They were granola-oriented but pretty much all the good gear makers were back then.

Then they got bought out by a conglomerate and began sucking. No more tents, bags, etc... just clothing, then just fashion clothing made offshore. Anyone actually buying clothing for the "outdoors" would be better off not, which makes this whole "White Privilege in the Outdoors!" ironic.

(Coincidentally, the same parent-- VF-- also bought Jansport, who USED to make awesome packs, but now also suck. Trend?)

They are no longer the same company, which was hippie-ish but tolerable and produced good stuff here in the USA.
