preten2bSo if I read this correctly, a previous gunman used a Ruger Mini 14. And the ban has named it as well as other semi automatics. The ban does not prohibit ownership YET. Just the sale transfer, or transport. Legislation to take care of the rest later. Well...shit!!
The Cabinet order doesn’t forbid owning any of the military-style weapons and their variants but it does ban the use and trade in them. He said the order has a two-year amnesty period for current owners, and there will be a compensation program that will require a bill passed in Parliament.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Friday that Canada is banning the use and trade of assault-style weapons immediately.
In the meantime, they can be exported, returned to manufacturers, and transported only to deactivate them or get rid of them. In certain limited circumstances, they can be used for hunting.
“You do not need an AR-15 to take down a deer,” Trudeau said. “So, effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade, assault weapons in this country.”
Trudeau said the weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time.
“There is no use – and no place – for such weapons in Canada,” he said.
Rampage:At least 18 people are dead in Canada shooting that spanned 12 hours
Mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada, but Trudeau said they are happening more often. Trudeau noted he was nearby in Montreal when gunman Marc Lepine killed 14 women and himself at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique college in 1989. The Ruger Mini-14 Lepine used is among weapons included in the ban.

RightwireHow many people in Canada have 'military grade assault weapons'? Doesn't that mean full auto, mil-spec?

We took a bus tour of the Western Rockies. Most people were Canadians. After a bit they forgot we were Americans. The comments were telling. The guide refused to go through an American city on a flight. Too rude, TSA nasty, etc. others chimed in about rude tourists, prices in the US, though a number shop here.
Nice people, pretty country, but I’ll always wonder what they said behind our backs.

By the way Javelin and TOW missile launchers are now prohibited as firearms. So are WWII anti tank rifles and a list of mortars and RPGs. In fact they have added so many non firearms to the list it's questionable why they called it a firearms act.
Shitty legislation drafted by idiots meant to reduce crime but essentially just punishing gun owners for living.
I didn't see SKS on the list. cause that would be crazy.
This just sounds personal:

SurefireIt's been a bad day here in Canada. Two of my guns are on the list, and as mentioned, they even wrote in language where they will add more to the list that shooters gravitate to in response to loss of the ones in the current list.
Thankfully our Alberta Premier is very much in support of gun owners, and has already mentioned taking action against the feds to prevent this Order in Council from, impacting Albertans.
Someone mentioned non-compliance like New Zealand - this isn't an option for many of the firearms that were already "restricted" because the government has records of ownership. The non-restricted guns, the government shouldn't know you own it and perhaps you could effectively avoid compliance.
Anyways, wish us luck up here.

But I was always told registering guns wouldn't lead to confiscation! I was told that was just a bunch of NRA fear mongering! Surely that isn't the case, the Horse Gestapo would
never just show up and take your guns!

Indeed. Anyone who attempts to tell you registration won't lead to confiscation is ignorant, or a liar. We all know that most people against guns have no understanding of gun crime, stats, guns, laws, or history - they just don't like guns and don't want others to have them because they are paranoid weaklings.

egregoreI've got the same question about Canada as New Zealand. The prime minister, all by him or herself, has the power to unilaterally declare "assault weapons" banned? And like others, I just assumed Canada had already done so.
