An American free climber falls

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50592646

Deep down, these free climb guys surely realize that gravity is a law and will ultimately rule if they make the slightest mistake, don't they?

Maybe this will be a wake up call to some of the others............

The title is a little misleading as he was certainly famous for free climbing but died coming down from a climb with the use of ropes.

Free climbing also uses ropes. Free soloing (which this guy apparently also did) uses no aids or ropes whatsoever.

The thread title is accurate, but the title at the website is indeed a bit misleading. Brad Gobright: Free solo climber falls to his death

Just because you can,
doesn't mean you should

Sounds like they got very careless with their equipment and procedures, making some incorrect assumptions, in what should have been the easy part of the climb. They were just rappelling down the rope at the end to get to the bottom.
Certainly a lesson of two in there that parallels casual gun handling and "accidental" discharges.
Complacency can kill you in many areas of life.

+1. The margin of error doing that kind of shit is extremely small and the consequences of making a mistake are very large.

An article I read yesterday said they failed to secure a knot that would have prevented this. Naturally, I can't find that article.

It appears to be a bit more than that. They were using a technique called "simul-rappeling", both men using a single rope with a single anchor, each man hanging on to each end. I understand it is far more dangerous, but it is supposed to be far quicker. If one man loses control of his end, the other man can fall without the counterbalance. Just reading about the technique, one can see there were numerous accidents and deaths using this.

Let's hope he didn't procreate. Gay free climbers. That's what the world needs.

You guys know my view on this idiotic shit. They're throwing their lives away..

They slip off the rock. During their plummet, God appears before them and says "I'll give you a second chance, but you have to promise to stop doing this ridiculous stuff."

Each and every one of them would agree. You know it's true.

Idiots. Genuine idiots. You need EXTREME SPORTS to feel alive? You wanna know what really makes you feel not alive? Being dead, stupid.

Thirty-one years old. These days, people are living into their nineties. This guy threw away - threw away- the potential of another 6 decades! What do you think he might have experienced in those 60+ years? But, oh, no, we have to behave recklessly just to feel alive. Genuine stupidity. The world tries to take your life each and every day. You don't need to help it out by behaving as if you're immortal. You're not immortal. You're a fragile bag of meat.

Now, let's just wait for the EXTREME supporters to show up in this thread with their rationalizations.

It's probability and statistics.

You roll the dice long enough at high risk events with no safety precautions and eventually you are going to roll snake-eyes at the wrong time.

The pair had misjudged how much rope was left beneath them, according to Jacobson – who was left with only a broken ankle from his fall.

He claimed Gobright slipped off the end of his side of the rope after failing to tie life-saving stopper knots in it – which would have been a guide to how much he had left to rappel down.

Gobright slipped from his side of the rope causing Jacobson, who was strapped to the other side, to also plunge, according to the surviving climber.

I guess they didn't bother to check each other's gear before each rappel.
