I suspect a hate crime. If so I wonder if there will be Federal charges. Here is the story:

CHICAGO — Chicago police has announced first-degree murder charges after a 71-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon near an elementary school in Chinatown.

Alphonso Joyner, 23, is accused of murdering Woom Sing Tse. According to police, around 12:30 p.m., Tse was walking on the 200 block of West 23rd Place when shots were fired from a silver sedan. Joyner then exited the vehicle and reshot Tse before driving off.

Tse was transported to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The brazen shooting was captured on surveillance video.

“He was a man who came to this country with just a few dollars in his pockets and through hard work and his spirit, achieved the American dream,” Chicago police Supt. David Brown said Wednesday night. “Mr. Tse built a home and provided for his family. He was a father, a husband, a grandfather, a man of the community, a Chicagoan.”

Police credit the quick work and cooperation of the Chinatown community with apprehending the suspect. CPD arrested Joyner minutes after the shooting on the Kennedy Expressway. A handgun and an extended magazine were recovered.

Joyner later tested positive for gunshot residue.

“Safety is often cited as one of the most important issues that the community cares about, so whenever something like this happens it is devastating, so we were glad in this case that it was solved so quickly,” said Grace Chen McKibben, executive director of Coalition for Better Chinese American Community (CBCAC).

A motive is unknown. Police said Joyner immediately invoked his right to silence, declining to speak with investigators.

Chicago police did not rule out Joyner’s involvement in other hate crimes and random acts of violence on the North Side. But at this time, police say they don’t have any direct links to Joyner in those cases.

Joyner has a previous criminal history. According to police, the 23-year-old suspect has been arrested four times, twice for gun offenses.

The shooting happened in the same block where Haines Elementary School is located. Witnesses said that children at the school were going to recess at the time of the shooting.

Simple. To many people, all Asians look the same and are all 'Chinese'. Next, they brought the virus and should just go back to their home country.

I know, it's irrational and crazy, but I've personally seen this behavior.

Chicago. 23 years old. 4 arrests with 2 associated with gun. And he’s still on the street with a gun.

Older chinese victim in chinatown may be just incidental.

Regardless, why was this guy still armed on the street? What kind of crime and punishment and gun control system does chicago have? One that is harmful to innocents i would say.

Some folks are just angry looking for someplace to vent their anger. Heck, sometimes I get angry and find myself in a nasty mood. I figured out a long time ago that I was better served figuring out a way to cool off rather than trying to vent my ire on other though. Guess this young man never did. Thug life?

From the photo of Joyner, I'd assume he is Black. Chicago (and other cities) seem to have a lot of Black men shooting people. More prevalent than would be expected from their proportion of the population. I don't know why this is, but it does need to be addressed.

I do believe that you may be right there. A certain element of the population does seem to have a way with high-falutin' names, or those more akin to either brands of furniture polish or Star Wars.

Don't they call that a "booster shot" in Chicago?

ETA: I am reminded of my used-to-be-a-friend from Aliquippa, PA who asked me if I've ever heard of a "Youngstown Starter" (car bomb), now I can ask him (if I ever see him again) "what's a "Chicago booster shot?"

It's all about feelings of inferiority. Chinese folks usually seem to be in control of their emotions, think before they make moves, quiet natured. It's easy to see how a completely undisciplined fella would feel "less than" and take it out on the Chinese person.
I think it’s complex and in addition to Bryan and sp wrote there is a 3rd factor. Generally, the Asian community is more likely to have a mother and father at home. My friends with Asian Moms were driven hard to succeed in school and career. Contrast that to the AA community with a much lower percentage of homes with Mother and Father, and less likely to have parent pushing them to succeed in school and career. The Asian kids may come from poor families but they’re setting the curve in school and the resentment builds up. Additionally, more likely to have lack of impulse control in AA so that combined with inferiority feelings from family and school results in AA on Asian violent crime.

Notice I intentionally use phrases like “more likely”, “lower percentage”, etc because I’m writing on the macro level. Obviously, there are Asian kids raised in single family households, AA kids raised in 2 parent households, AA kids who set the curve in school, Asian kids that don’t excel in school, Asian kids who become violent criminals, AA kids with impulse control, etc. However, the odds are in favor of what I wrote.

The sad reality is we’re being conditioned to not call out factual realities due to being labeled racist or insensitive. We have a societal problem of people who lack impulse control and place no value on human life. That problem has manifested itself more deeply within a segment of the population and is not being called out by the media or that population itself. I do not believe the problem is based upon race, but as others have pointed out has a strong correlation to the breaking of traditional families.

Bill Cosby is a perv and convicted rapist, but in the 60s, 70s and 80s, he spoke out against poor behavior in the AA community. He wasn't wrong.

All very true.

I agree with the article. It points out the fact that anyone can make it in this country if they work and study hard enough, but that doesn't fit the narrative coming out of the ghetto, so there's resentment. And when you have resentment in people who have little to no self control, things get out of hand in a hurry.

Old guy was shot 22 times. Sad...
I worked in that area for a while. I worked robberies too. It's a messed up situation. The Chinese in Chinatown make excellent victims, which is sad. Barely speak English, and when a translator gets there, their descriptions are horrible.
"Who robbed you?"
"Black man"
"How tall was he?"
"Black man"
"Do you know what he was wearing?"
"Black man..."

Yeah, not a lot to go on. If you do get an offender, you've got about a .5% chance that a positive ID can be made. Unless there's cameras or other evidence, we're pretty much screwed. A lot of the times, people in Chinatown don't call the police.

Then there's the tour busses that pick up/drop off in Chinatown from the casinos on schedule. Just sit back and watch, sooner or later, one of them is getting robbed.

But the food is good in some of the places. Others are closed on a regular basis because of health code violations.

I agree with you 110%!
BUT....

According to the Liberal / Democratic Narrative, they are a poor and uneducated people with no chance of making it on their own. "The Man" has always got their Jack-boot on their neck. They ALWAYS need a handout or some sort of assistance. Not to worry, because someone will come to their rescue and "give them just enough" and make all their decisions for them.

When one does make it, others are resentful of the success.
A few turn on their own people and support that liberal bullshit narrative.

lightfoot for example- 4th of July speech, it stated that the Constitution wasn't written for people like her....
Ignorant bitch said that shit as she stood at the Mayoral Podium of one of the largest cities in the United States.

I'm sorry, but I have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard... You have to be joking with that question!!! [/sarcasm]

Short and quick answer- FUCKIN NONE!

The Courthouse at 26th and California has revolving doors for a reason. There are ZERO, NONE, NADA, ZILCH repercussions for being arrested here in Cook Co.

Yet people (especially ones that live here) wonder why there's so much crime? Roll Eyes

There's times at work when I feel like the parable about the kid sticking his fingers in the dike.
