If my current phones battery gets much worse, I may look at getting a new one, but nothing I. The new 17’s looks like a must-have feature that would convince me to upgrade on the strength of new features alone. - Bret

I wanted to wait on the foldable phone from Apple but it’s a ways out and I don’t want the first year model anyway. ATT is offering me $1100 in credit for my 14 Pro. With Apple and the carrier it’s always about getting out of your current phone at the right moment. $1100 in credit for mine which has a battery capacity of 81% means that all I’m doing is paying tax on a $1099 17 Pro, which is $90. Mine is 3 years old so $90 for a new battery is worth it to me. IDGAF about all the new things. This is strictly business/financial as I’m required to have one of these POS for work. I use my iPad at home more than I use the stupid phone. Edit: Checked the Air deal from ATT out. I don’t want a larger phone (I wanted a smaller phone!) but figured I’d kick the can. ATT will give me $830 for my 14 Pro if I purchase the Air. They’ll give me $1100 if I purchase the 17 Pro. Pro it is What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

I have a 16 pro max and an ultra 2.. nothing announced made me even have that thought to upgrade. That said, they missed a chance to recover from the lackluster Intelligence launch last yr. I’ve been with Verizon 10+ years with no plans on changing. They have the best network coverage in my area, competitively priced, and have always quickly resolved any situation to my satisfaction. I’ve previously been with ATT and T-Mobile, both resulted in frustration over coverage as well as service. The “increased” monthly payment is $2.75 ($99 over 36mo 0% interest) and my plan has a 3 year price guarantee so it is stable for the period I receive the payment credits. No surprises. The phones are network unlocked after 2-3 months and I think it is reasonable to structure the deal as a monthly payment less a payment credit. I think that is fair and more reasonable than the old “penalty for early termination” of the cellular contract. If you want to cancel service or switch to another carrier, you pay the remaining balance for the phone, forfeit the remaining credits, and move on. Frequently carriers will offer a “we’ll pay off your current phone to switch to us” deal. No business sense at all in subsidizing $1100 on a new phone without some method of incentivizing the customer to continue being a customer. Of course you have the option of buying the phone outright or trading your old phone direct to Apple (for significantly less). For comparison, trading a 14+ through Apple you will get $240 no strings attached. While they will give you $520 for a 15 PM. I’ll take the $1100 deal and “promise” to keep doing for three years what I was going to be doing anyway. What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

I missed the Apple event and haven't had a chance to watch it at Apple.com so I'm not sure what has changed. Unless the changes are dramatic, I'll more than likely keep my Pro Max 15. I'm not thrilled about all the Apple intelligence BS these new models have baked in. I think phone sales are way down since they all pretty much do the same thing now and people are holding onto them way longer so they are trying to make that sale whichever way they can.

Ok 911Boss, I'm trying to find the catch. I thought we has 16 Pros but my wife and I each have 15 Pros. The Verizon tradin deal is basically giving a free phone if we keep the lines for 3 years which as you said, we'd be doing anyway. There's always a catch but I haven't found it yet. Neither of us have a problem with our phones but maybe it's , why not trade in if it's free.

I don't have a dog in the hunt (Android-ista!) however I do hope folks are tracking that the thinner (and cool!) new iPhone has a physically smaller battery. "The new iPhone Air is super thin. What does that mean for battery life?" It might (or might not!) still be better battery life than what you are currently using, but there's less than the normal-thickness one.

I traded in my 11 Pro for a 15 Pro 2 years ago, because I got like $800 trade-in from Verizon. The change to USB-C and notch-to-pill were the kickers to jump on it. And the 11 was 4 years old and bogging down a bit on some apps. But the discount is applied monthly for 3 years so I think if I end this contract I will owe the last year of full payments with no discount. That is unless they make a deal to make it worthwhile.

I haven’t looked at the Verizon website, so far haven’t been contacted by Verizon. I have an iPhone 14 Pro. If I can get $1100 credit toward a 17 pro, I’m in. The Air is intriguing, but I’m most interested in the camera and battery life. I have to go to apple.com and see what they say about that. I might be able to talk my wife into an Air—she’s got the most recent SE, still with the home button, and the camera is not very good. Verizon at the moment is still offering deals on the 16; pre-orders on the 17 don’t start until 9/12. OK, checked out apple.com. Wow, the promises for performance of the 17 Pro are more than tempting. I can’t wait to get mine! _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

Not quite free, going to cost me $100. To get the best deal you need to be on the “Unlimited Ultimate” their highest priced plan. I’m already there, but my guess is they expect lots of folks to upgrade for the deal. Other thing is a lot of folks are tired of best deal going to new customers while loyal customers only get their bill. Seems more and more offers are now for existing customers as well. I imagine after the initial roll out, down the road a bit it will only be “with a new line of service”. Of course they are also selling off the trade in phones so they cover some of the overhead that way. What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand???

I’ve got the ultimate plan as well. I guess a fresh battery and bump in battery life is worth a hundred bucks.

I'll get one just to get orange. But I have a fleet of six, so I always get new, and chase the old ones down the chain to my wife and kids. All are on at least 12 at this point. My kids like the mini, so it'll be a hard sell to shake them into a newer platform in a few years. I'm sure the batteries will help me sell the deal. I insist that we keep all technology under the security update umbrella. The cost of breach can be staggering.

I agree. As a tool, I find the iPhone better than the alternatives. It's on the same level as today's modern TVs versus the CRT TVs with vacuum tubes that I could take to the grocery store and find a replacement myself. I don't want to have to tinker in the back of the tv; I'd rather just be watching tv. I forget what model my wife had but when it was time to upgrade, the 15 was available. But I bought her a 14+, the same as I had, to standardize on the lightning connector. I upgrade only when mine begins to become sluggish and my wife only when her phone becomes obsolete. If it's still working, she'd rather not have to learn a new model. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
