So musk is going to pack up his tent and leave? The ultimate showman or flim-flam man.

California is the last place to try and build an affordable car of any type.

Back to the idea you must take it from us first. Seen your checking account lately? And extra $1200 there? They didn't take that from us first, they'll take it from us later. Government doesn't need the money to spend it. They spend all the time and then tax it out of us as tehy see fit. What usually happens is they give the money away, then decide they need to recover it. Then they realize its a good scam so they tax us even more. They give away $2 trillion, they tax us $3 trillion. They need the extra for their friends and own retirement.

Actually they are charging it to our grandkids and great grandkids.

I'd like to see him move out of CA, however the real hit will be when SpaceX gives up its Hawthorne Airport location and shutters it facility at the Port of LA.

Until then, Muskrat is just blowing stale air

No they’ve stolen way more than that from me already. Been paying taxes for almost 35 years so it was my money to begin with.

Musk: "Tesla is the last carmaker left in CA."

Found this interesting. Not sure that is entirely correct, but might be very soon.

He employs “10,000” people and this county health official and state assemblywoman both say “f**k Elon Musk.” I can’t think of a reason why he would stay there.

The gov officials for Alameda County aren't terribly smart. They compete with the city of Oakland for one-upmanship in leftist ideology. I'm amazed outlaying suburb communities like Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin haven't moved to secede.

Not a fan of Elon Musk, but I'd love to see him give the middle finger to California by packing up and leaving.

So how many grants, tax credits and incentives could he get for moving operations to an abandoned site in Detroit?

He may move HQ... But he isn't moving the plant. They just invested millions into a new shop and moving the plant would take a lot of time and a shit load of money.

Don't be so sure he won't leave. Tesla occupies the former Toyota plant, now in KY I believe.

Past expenditures do not govern future decisions. That was covered in my first accounting class in college. If the cost of doing future business exceeds the cost of moving to Texas, they will move. The building cost 42 million, nearly nothing considering the residual value of the building. The tooling will go with them. There’s not that much holding them in California.

And plus, Northern Nevada has been expanding rapidly since they started manufacturing there. I think that would be the logical move.

I hope he follows through!

Tesla already manufactures its car and home batteries at its massive Gigafacility just outside of Reno. There's plenty of land to build a vehicle manufacturing plant, a base of blue collar workers to draw from, major interstate and rail lines are adjacent and it wouldn't be a stretch for many of those Fremont employees to make the 4-hour move, especially when the personal financial benefits are laid-out. If those wealthy Tesla executives are desperately clinging to remain in CA or, the high-desert doesn't suit them, nearby Truckee and its affluent communities are nearby.

$42 million is a small facelift for one section of the plant. An entire assembly plant is at least $1billion. Thats why you don't see that many new ones. You also have to consider clean up costs, which is why most old plants aren't sold, they are just abandoned. There is very little value in an old empty auto plant, which is why Tesla abandoned their original plans for a super environmental plant and went with the old GM Toyota plant because it was a steal. As for moving the tooling? Generally not worth the cost.

Musk has the money and doesn't really give a shit about Tesla being super profitable so maybe he's nuts enough to do it. But an OEM auto plant doesn't spend a single dollar without 100 people getting permission and studying if that $1 is needed. These accountants and purchasing agents can squeeze a.quarter till the eagle screams. They wouldn't have invested in a new paint shop if they didn't foresee staying there for years. This isn't about being profitable in California, it's about him needing to get the plant back online ASAP. Building a new plant is a multi-year proposition that doesn't help him with his current issue. And if you do want a new plant, the old one has to be running in the meantime to keep you in business. This is the only Tesla assembly plant. He's not shutting it down.
