Aging, is a natural process a part of life. Life is like a card game. How you age is somewhat in your control, but at times not controlable. Some of us are dealt a hand during the game we wish we had a chance to change out but can’t. How we play the hand dealt to us shows others how good of a player we are. Allowing emotional health chips to be spent on a poor hand will shorten the game. As we age our body breaks down, doesn’t heal as fast, is affected by the forces around us. We change what we are doing and how we are doing it according to the cards in our hand. How am I handling it I fucking hate Poker, I would rather play Go Fish ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

I'm handling it by fighting it every step of the way. Age is winning, but not quickly. I'm making it work for it I took a six month hiatus from working out and watching my diet. Paid for it. Got achy and creaky. 36" waist jeans got snug. Now been back on my workout schedule for six weeks. Corrected my diet somewhat. Feel a lot better. After the first of the year I'll bear down on my diet. As you grow older you have to work to stay functional and that's all there is to it. No sense denying it, because the results don't lie. So I do what I have to do so I can do what I want to do. "America is at that awkward stage. Depends on who you talk to. I have my mother’s contempt for growing old. I can pass for as much as 15 years less than my actual age, and I’m happy to do so. I’ll work my damn ass off while my contemporaries sit in the shade and rest their arms on their sizable bellies. Still, I have old injuries that limit what I can do, especially with respect to weight training, and I enjoyed that for years. I’ve been blessed with so much, and good health is up near the top. Best to all of you this Christmas season. _______________________________________________________ despite them

I am 62. I ran 45 miles this week with a long run of 18 miles. Qualified for (and made it in to) Boston in April. One of the best things about aging is that everyone drops out of your age group. I am not fast but I won my age group in three major half marathons last year. I am getting slower - nothing I can do about it. I am not as strong as I was. For me the key is not to focus on what I can't do, but what I can. I set goals that I think are realistic and then set out to reach them. I don't get to caught up in whether I reach a particular goal or not. The key for me is to keep trying. Just had a huge scare on Friday. I had SVT - which I had never experienced before. Heart rate was pegged at 220 - couldn't catch my breath. Lovely visit to ER. IV and they gave me a medication which reset the HR. Felt fine. Asked if I should change what I was doing, go on medications. They said no - I was good to go. Might happen again, might not. No way of knowing. So I ran 18 miles the next day. Keep your head down and keep on keeping on. (and I am scheduled to see a cardiologist.)

I'm thinking of buying an Army cot and moving into the bathroom to make the trips shorter.

I just turned 83 last week. No major issues that I know of now. The VA put in a pacemaker a year and a half ago. No problem so far. Watch my diet and my doc said to lose weight 4 years ago so I lost 45 lbs of muscle. Now down to 155. Right now my activity is limited to taking are of my wife, my athletic activity is shopping for groceries and my mental activity is trying to find my iPhone and where the heck I left my glasses. Thank God for the VA too. Keeping up my appointments is fun too. Officers lives matter!

Walking horse, saw your comment about ice fishing. I had to quit ice fishing too. At my age chopping a hole in the ice for the boat was getting too hard. Officers lives matter!

My wife and I are over 70 and doing ok physically, but her behavior is becoming increasingly more immature. Last night, while I was taking a bath, she came in and sank all my little boats.

Zero complaints. It’s call heavy weight lifting. Squats. Deadlifts. Heavy weight. Good form. Lotsa protein and veggies. I’ll kick any 20 year olds ass up and down the block.

It’s not what she does with the little boats that is concerning, it’s if she notices the periscope and what she does with that discovery. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ

A 56 year old colleague and I taught a bike patrol school this past summer. I'm 34 (which I'm not saying is old), and most of the students were in their mid 20s and in reasonably good shape. The other instructor and I got through it without issue, but he talked about how he didn't feel his age until he tried to do stuff, or until after. I know that I have noticed after most fights (wrestling folks into handcuffs) that something hurts the next day now. That never used to happen. Time marches on...

It’s bullshit and I’m not enjoying it that much. Joints falling apart, too easy to gain weight, blood pressure is going up. Still got my hair and the rifle still works so I guess it’s not all bad. ETA: I hit 46 this year

Same as Ramius. I eat like a nutritionist, train (lifting, swimming, and bike) like an athlete, sleep like a baby and so far champion of the age deal. I’ll keep fighting. Like Clint says, the old man is always there, it’s just whether you choose to listen to him, I don’t. I feel great. I look at fat fools 20 years younger than me in the gym everyday and I laugh. Not a bad deal seeing college aged women checking you out either. What am I doing? I'm talking to an empty telephone

Like Prefontaine and others - I'm 51, have had 5 shoulder surgeries, ACF on C5-C6 with some nerve damage. I'm handling by tackling head on and making choices to live long and healthy. BUT - I don't let my injuries or changes in what I can do slow me down - adapt overcome. I eat better than I ever have, train cardio hard on elliptical, paddleboard, kayak using a heart monitor (new to me a few years ago), and avoid high impact/prone to injure me activities. For the first time in 20 years I don't hurt (chronic pain sucks) and was cleared for more serious weights a few months ago. Not perfect - 32 waist should be 30 (10-15 lbs for me) and I like my beer - albeit in much less quantity than in the past. You have to work our twice as hard, eat 1/2 half as much for 3/4 the result as you age. Embrace the suck as they say - but honestly I look 10-20 years younger than others my age and younger than those 10-20 years my junior. Manage stress, stay fit, eat right and make a conscious choice to be happy / positive. Was just at my uncles' 90th birthday - he looks great, fit, active and sharp. I will be there with my wife and my grandkids. “Forigive your enemy, but remember the bastard’s name.” -Scottish proverb
