I'm on the quick downslide to 60, and the number one thing is accepting older age and dealing with it, rather than trying to defy and deny it. I know guys like the latter and it is kinda pathetic. Dyeing their hair, wearing "younger" clothing, etc. Not for me.

A mere 5-7 years ago in my early 50s, due to strenuous workouts and watching my diet, I was in the best shape of my life. But doing approx. the same now is more difficult, less rewarding. As posted above, a nice 8 hour stint of sleep is nice if you can get it. Eyesight and hearing are becoming more diminished each year, a constant game of dealing with both. My doctor tells me the aches and pains in my current life is normal for my age, he says it will likely get better in my 60s and 70s. Despite the aches, I still workout 4-5 times week and go on daily 45 min dog walks when I'm not traveling. But for the majority of the week, Advil is my best friend.

I hit 50 this year. Been doing P90X and such for 8 years now as well as diet change and keeping active. Other than a few minor aches I feel really good.
For me the active part after work everyday is the big help.

Just turned 68 in October. Been retired since I turned 62.

It's a little disconcerting to realize that I'm "damn near 70" when I'm still about 16 on this side of my bifocals.

The good news is I have 4 older brothers, all still around and 3 out of 4 of them in decent health and still alert and active. The third not so much, but that's due entirely to poor choices on his part. Oldest is 83, will be 84 in February.

So, it looks like I have a lot of good years left. I'm in good health overall, and am very conscientious about managing my BP and cholesterol which are my only medical issues. I try to eat healthy without being compulsive about it, enjoy the foods I like in moderation and keep a pretty tight rein on my weight. "Working out" and draconian diets are not for me. Life's too short.

I've never been one to sit and vegetate so I find ways to stay active physically and (to a somewhat lesser degree) mentally. Never have been a particularly social critter, I'm fine with my own company and immediate family. (One of the things I like about the innerwebz: sociable when I feel like it, ignore it when I don't)

I do make allowances for my age and physical limitations. I'm still working with all my OEM joints and plan to keep it that way if at all possible, so I don't abuse my knees, hips, back or shoulders. Things I would have muckled onto and bulled my way through 30 years ago now get done with power equipment or a checkbook.

The only other thing that has really changed is how worked up I get over things I can't control. Every time I start getting pissed off over how things are going to hell in a handbasket, I remind myself "I'll be dead before it gets that bad."

Turning 40 next year. Eek

Sounds ridiculous saying so cause I don't feel like I'm almost 40, though my wife likes to remind me often that I am since she is quite a few years younger than me.

I feel like I'm just turning 30 to be honest. Of course, I'm not sure what 40 is supposed to feel like. Aye, I don't like getting older. No, sir. I don't like it one bit.

It's just a number in my opinion.
After having my chest cracked open like a walnut over a year ago doing 5 by-passes, I have decided to live my life to the fullest.
I an VERY fortunate to be here, my main artery was 90% blocked, the other 4 were 70% plus blocked. I was a walking dead man.
But now, with my recent visit to my cardiologist, she tells me everything looks great.
I am happy yo be spending another Christmas with my daughters and grandchildren.

So...I am taking aging day to day and feeling amazing for a 67 year old guy and staying active.

I found the cure for growing older....a first generation Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike. I feel like I’m 18 again when I throw my leg over it and go for a blast down twisty country roads. It’s my timemachine and escape capsule for when life brings me down.

The back pain, loss of energy and time it takes to recover from drinking are the major changes I’ve noticed thus far. I’m not exactly old but I’m definitly feeling age begin to take its toll.

I LOVE the look I get when I pull up on my bike, peel off my helmet and people look at the bike and then look at the grey-bearded, wrinkled, bald-headed, bi-focaled old fart that got off it.

And yup, they are time machines for sure. The foremost of the many reasons I love that FJ-09 is that I can ride it with near-crotch rocket performance, but still walk when I get off it.

Nearly 50 and I can honestly say I feel better physically than I have in a couple decades at least.
Having quit smoking a bit over a year ago, eating cleaner, and taking a forum member's advice about exercising have all had obvious effects.

Mentally life has always been tough for me to figure out why I still bother. Wish I could offer help with that, but I just don't feel qualified.

I focus on the old triad, Body, Mind & Spirit. Do something positive for those everyday. Don't allow your thoughts attitudes, routine or your body to become crystallize or inflexible. When asked my age other than on legal documents, my response is, "Old enough to know better and Young enough not to care!"

I'm on the downside of 75 with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, probably from a couple of years in Nam, that right now seems to be dormant after five bouts of chemo which finished up in July of this year. Have a paralyzed right foot due to service connected back injuries and am in need of some vascular repair. I just work out at the local Y 4-5 times a week, stay active in church and in other groups. Don't worry about my problems cause it's in God's hands.

Each day I strive to make someone else smile;
and each day I rejoice in what clean living, righteous thoughts, such as that prevarication may be. Yes, I praise God.

Although returned from mission, the sounds of the Enola Gay cooling down on the taxiway was still in the air. Yes, I have surpassed my '3 score and 10' and then some.

Yes, I split & stack my own firewood; Yes, I have the cords delivered these days.
Yes I enjoy driving around at Geezer 1 speed in my rural domain, and yes I avoid driving even near the Jaws of Hell anytime. PDX alone now has more population than the entire state when I first moved this side of the Snake River.

Yes, time & tide & gravity tend to periodically overwhelm my intent to Get Something Done, and Yes, finally I have gained the patience to spend whatever time it takes on certain little chores that never held my attention before.

And yes, there are tons of things that used to be enjoyable, while what I do enjoy can be entertaining at a far greater level of satisfaction and take days in their own turn.

Yes, there are various medical issues that having survived them, probably made me stronger none the less. One of them was living for a year in a full length body cast.

Life is good.

55, only real ailment is some shoulder pain, doctor says is arthritis. Weight is creeping up a little, got to lay off the chips. Sleep, diet and exercise, in that order are my priorities. Don't want to end up the grumpy old fat grouch either. Gonna go to dayshift from nights soon for my last two years, that should help alot.

I turned 71 last Thursday and mentally I feel 40ish but the body, not so much. I am paying for a fun and rowdy young life. Neuropathy in my feet, arthritis and vascular issues. The cancer I fought and escaped from a couple of years ago really took a lot out of me but I'm fighting back as best I can. I'm not complaining mind you, because I've lost some younger friends and family members that didn't make it as long as I have. I sure as hell don't sweat the small stuff any more, that's for sure. I make the most of each day and enjoy the things that I can still do. At my age I make new adventures where I can and look forward to the new ones in my future. Like I said, I don't sweat the small stuff.

Jim

My 81st BDay was 2 days ago (there's even a thread about it). My friends say I don't look that old, more like mid 70s. I'm not a very active person, but I still manage to get around fairly well. I take 1 or 2 major trips each year and get lots of pictures. I sing with the church shoir and play handbells with 2 groups.

It is important to have things to do and some kind of schedule, but it needs to be flexible enough that there is room to do something just because the opportunity came up and you want to do it.

I've read this a few times. I do not see anything to worry about. Age is just a number. If you are happy and healthy, that's what matters.
