I'm super active. I'm at the academy x6 days a week training BJJ & helping Coach. (Purple Belt) Then usually workout at lunch x2-x3 days a week.

Workout crew wanted to do a awful workout I used to do. x7 Burpees Every Minute on the Minutes for 30 minutes. Been probably 6-8 months since I've done it.

Normal workouts are runs, KB swings, Lunges, Squats circuit HIT type workouts. Sometimes we put Spartacus workout on phone and follow along. It's always terrible what ever we do. But this time it caught up with me.

Monday Day we did the burpee workout = x210 Burpees and then I trained probably 1.5 - 2 hours that night in BJJ. Was tired. Then taught Tuesday day class. Tuesday night my right trap starting hurting... Then it starting hurting BAD and felt pretty right & swollen by around 7 pm or so. By 10PM if hurt so bad I drove to the ER.

After a whole battery of tests, Labs, EKG, X-Ray, etc.. My CK levels were at 3,857 units/L. Took in x2 bags of IVs to flush and some muscle relaxers. So now I'm on light duty hyper hydrating for a few days.

I tried to go to bed and sleep it off. My instincts said something was wrong. Trust your instincts guys and if you think the ER is a possibility then trust your gut.

Morale of the story. Don't be an idiot and push yourself to hard & Burpees might kill you. Big Grin

We had a guy get rhabdo on day 3 of the fire academy. He went home that night and started pissing motor oil. Thankfully he listened to his nurse girlfriend who forced him to go to the ER. They said if he didn't he probably would have gone into organ failure and possibly died.

Good on you for getting it checked.

I crossfitted for years so was familiar with the condition. Heard of guys getting it. I drink a TON of water a day. So my urine never really got darker than light yellow. If I wasn't a hydrating thirsty monkey I hate to imagine how bad it would have gotten.

We had an instructor get it at the academy. Another one tore his bicep. Eventually age catches up to you, and your body won't tolerate what it used to tolerate. I run, walk, and do my situps and pushups regularly, but I don't think I'll ever have to worry about pushing myself that hard. You CrossFit guys are nuts!

Take advantage of the opportunity to rest, and I hope you are back to normal quick!

And yeah, I always suspected that burpees could kill you. Thanks for giving me an argument for the next time somebody tries to make me do them Big Grin!

I got rhabdo after a 21 mile, 2300’ hike I did in 7:38. Should have gone to the ER like my RN wife told me to but started guzzling fluids and electrolytes. I started hurting at mile 8 and just gutted it out.

It’s no joke.

The doctors believed that it was the flutter kicks that did in the guy in my class.

The running opinion is that they only thing they're good for is making you miserable.

I had rhabdo due to statins. After twenty hours on the floor I was discovered and spent seven days in the hospital. I was essentially paralyzed.

Good you got it seen so quickly

Daughter got it during INDOC at USNA Prep school. Spent 5 days in the hospital hooked up to fluids before enzymes decreased enough for her to leave. She was close to organ failure

Never heard of this before. Honestly, thought you fat fingered when typing Rambo. Which also would have made me click.

Couple of guys got it in my CrossFit class. It was pretty serious. Fortunately Ive gotten too old to push myself that hard although I think I came close in December when I had to move into my new house and be out of my old one at the same time. I worked nonstop 21 hours In A row, slept 2 hours and then Worked 23 hours in a row and slept 1 hour. I had a granola bar and a bottle of water. I couldn’t walk the next day and was seriously fatigued for 2 weeks.

I wanted to learn more and searched for “rhabdo.”

WebMD used this language in listing factors or actions that could bring about the condition.

quote:
Extreme muscle strain, especially in those assigned male at birth who exercise regularly and have a body mass index (BMI) over 30, whether due to being overweight or extremely muscular. It can happen in elite athletes, too, and rhabdo can be more dangerous if there is more muscle mass to break down.
