As discussed at length in the other thread about the subject, 21 has a lot of significance for the guards (hence the XXI on the slide), and the large magazines are capable of holding 21 rounds.

The story in the link says:
"Cocking Serrations: XXI cocking serrations are engraved on the slide to signify the twenty-one steps it takes for the Tomb Sentinels to walk by the Tomb of the Unknowns and the military honor of a 21 Gun Salute"

I would hope that they are fully loaded (21 in the magazine and one in the chamber). I would further hope that we never find out.

And if we’re going to mock one ceremonial feature of guarding the Tombs such as the type of pistol magazine carried as being “silly,” then why not dispense with all the ceremony? Have the grounds keepers call the MPs at Fort Myer if there’s a problem—or perhaps dispense with the Tombs as well.

That said, a question for all the doubters...

With all the wack-job extremists/terrorists looking for high-visibility targets of opportunity (includes both the Muslim extremist jihadi types and the homegrown violent left-wing types), not to mention the attack that occurred in Canada just two years ago, exactly why would they NOT be carrying loaded sidearms?

RHINOWSOI have no doubt that those are at least Condition 3 weapons (pistols). No evidence or inside knowledge, just my measured assumption.

RAMIUSI’d say the rifles aren’t.
But I’d hope the pistols are.
