Firearms Collection Insurance Login/Join
Life's too short to
live by the rules

My current firearms collection exceeds what my homeowners policy covers. So we need to get some type of supplemental insurance. My wife has been shopping around and most of the providers want serial numbers/make/model of all the firearms in the collection. What is everyone’s thoughts on providing this information to an insurance company? Any worry about that data leaking out, being sold, getting into the hands of the government, etc?

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a good reputable insurance company we could use.

Thanks
Chris

https://collectinsure.com/guns/ is very highly regarded as a source for supplemental firearms insurance.

They do not require a list of make/model/serial for their coverage.

(However, you'll want to keep personal documentation of all your firearms' serials, value, make/model, photo/video evidence, receipts, etc. in a safe place. That'll be needed if you ever have to make a claim. They won't just take your word for it if you say you had $20,000 worth of guns stolen.)

I had no trouble getting my HO policy to increase the amount. Did you check on that?

It's definitley worth looking into. But that's not always an option with every company. Or sometimes the available increase is still pretty minimal.

For example, my homeowners insurance had only one option for an increase to the blanket unscheduled firearms coverage. There's base firearms coverage of $2500 included in all homeowners policies, which can be increased up to $5000 with a specific additional firearms rider.

But $5k is still pretty small for many gun owners.

Anything beyond that required either an itemized schedule of guns on a separate personal items policy, or a supplemental policy from an outsider provider.

Rogue is correct.

The NRA used to have a plan wherein you didn't have to supply Serial Numbers but that ended a while back.

Do these policies require you to list every firearms/serial # or is it just an aggregate $ amount of coverage? If you have to list serial #'s - you are basically registering all your firearms.

Some do, some do not. My policy does not require listing any guns.

The $5000 limit is amusing. Or was that per gun? Big Grin Of course not. That stuff was thought up by non-gun owners. Or WalMart shoppers. Anyone know if it also covers ammo? Not hard to have that much ammo at today's prices.

Just out of curiosity, do these policies cover theft and fire...etc? A while back when I spoke to my (now former) broker, the policy they offered was only for things like fire, theft was NOT really an option. When I pressed the issue, I didnt really like the answer but I also sat on it.

my HO insurance company does not require a list and it covers serious amounts (six figures plus) provided I'm willing to pay (which is actually not that much). You might investigate if changing HO gets you a company that is better overall.

I had the NRA policy until it ceased. I converted it to Lockton which is similar to what NRA offered. No serial numbers etc. I do have to provide specifics on any firearm valued over $2,500 but no serial number.

This company has been my go to for years, much less expensive than Lockton.

Yeah. Equally laughable is their corresponding $2500 maximum limit on gold and silver bullion.

Might have made sense back when gold was sub-$300 an ounce, 20 years ago. But $2500 is just a little over one ounce of gold these days.
