I think you can only request 4 cards total in your lifetime as well.

Earlier I posted that in South Dakota REAL ID was mandatory and that I got mine back in 2010 not long after South Dakota enacted its compliance with the Federal REAL ID Act.

This is from the state's DMV site:

New Applicants and Transfers from Out of State:

If you are a new applicant, a non-U.S. citizen, or a transfer from another state, you must provide proof of lawful status in the United States by providing a certified U.S. birth certificate (state certified only -- photocopies and hospital-issued certificates will not be accepted), a valid, non-expired U.S. Passport/Passport Card, a Certificate of Citizenship/Naturalization, a Permanent Resident Card, an Employment Authorization Card, or a Foreign Passport with a U.S. Visa/I-94. If you were born in a U.S. Territory, you'll need to provide a valid, non-expired U.S. Passport/Passport Card or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad instead of a birth certificate. If your name is different than what is on your proof of lawful status document, you'll need show the progression of each name change by providing proof of name change with a marriage certificate, divorce decree, and/or court order. We can only accept original documents, no photocopies.

If you are a new applicant or a transfer from another state and your current driver license DOES NOT have a gold star in the upper corner, you will also be required to provide, your Social Security Card (showing your full social security number), a W-2 (showing your full social security number), a 1099 (showing your full social security number), or a pay stub (showing your full social security number). We can only accept original documents. No photocopies!

All applicants are required to provide two documents proving your residential/physical address. These documents must show your full name, your physical/residential address, and be less than one year old. Examples of such documents are a utility bill, a pay stub, a rent receipt, a phone bill, a bank statement, a mortgage document, a homeowner's insurance policy/bill, a tax document, your vehicle registration, etc.

I don't have a Passport, so when my DL was up for renewal two years ago I went the Real ID route.

Upgraded when I renewed DL earlier this year.

I now carry 4 government issued id’s with my picture. I usually pick a different ID each time I vote.

I went with the real ID as I don't have/nor do I want to spend the money on a passport and its renewal fees; that I or the old the ball and chain will never use. We never travel outside of the USA (includes Canada and Mexico)and don't do cruises.

Drive every where we want to go, the old lady and I refuse to be treated like criminals by TSA and herded at cattle. When I am a paying customer I demand to be treated with all due respect and not subject to unneeded search and seizures

I wonder if they will accept a suppressor tax stamp as a form of ID when applying? That would make heads at DMV explode.

Thanks for the tip!
My wife will be doing this in a couple of weeks when it will be about 2 miles from us.

If you have read my above post, you'll see that it was not necessarily "easy-breezy" in New Kent, Virginia.

My drivers license was to expire this past Summer & I wanted to get a Real ID, but I never had a birth certificate & needed to apply to the state for one. When it came it listed me as a female.

I called the Dept of Health, who issues the birth certificates, and the lady said that to fix it, I needed to have a whole list of documents notarised, and send them in, then they'd decide IF a mistake had been made. F that!

So I just went to the DMV for my Real ID with the birth certificate saying I was female & figured maybe I could slip it past them.

A little background here: Residents of PA are probably sick & tired of seeing our Secretary of Health, Dr. "Rachael" Levin on TV. "He's" a raging transvestite, who dresses in women's clothes, wears makeup, and never, ever misses an opportunity to get in front of the TV cameras. This is the he/she who's in charge of the PA Dept of Health, which issues birth certificates.

If they gave me a problem at the DMV about the mistake on the birth certificate, I'd just accuse them of assuming my identity, scream discrimination & demand to see "Dr. Rachael" in person.

It turns out that they just copied everything, gave me my new drivers license/real ID, & sent me on my way.

On the way out though, I just couldn't resist using the newly renovated bathroom with the "Gender Neutral" sign proudly displayed on the door.

I'm sorry your experience sucked. DMV isn't typically known for speed and efficiency; that's probably why I was so impressed with my visit to "the bus."

God bless America.

When I moved to Texas and got my DL in early 2018, it was automatically Real ID compliant (yellow star). Didn't realize it until this year.

I don't touch toilet seats in public bathrooms. I lift them with my foot & leave them up when I'm done.

Getting one was easy and fast at my local DMV office. It took my birth certificate, SS card, CWP, drivers license and 30 minutes of my time.

Having a "Real ID" driver's license vs. a non-"Real ID" driver's license doesn't matter to local law enforcement on stuff like traffic stops.

"Real IDs" are for federal purposes, like going through TSA security to get on an airplane or entering certain federal buildings with ID checkpoints.

Never was an issue when I was policing...what did come up was NC had red writing on the margin about “Legal presence expires...” (think dreamers from the obama era) but if they had a valid DL no one cared if it was a real I’d or not.

How's the tin hat fit? All they require is proof of citizenship, SSN, and proof of address. You're not giving the government anything they don't already have.
