navyshooter" Real ID "
I did it earlier this year. The state I live in requires it for firearm purchases.

tatortoddTexas implemented Real ID the month after I repatriated here from Can-eh-duh so I was one of the last to have a regular DL.
We kept getting reminders at work to do it in ‘19 because all the slackers would be in long lines in ‘20. Last spring, I ended uo taking the motorcycle safety foundation basic course and passed both the written and practical test which made me eligible for an inexpensive rubber stamp on a Texas motorcycle endorsement. As a bonus, my new DL with the motorcycle endorsement is Real ID.

jimmy123xFlorida did mine automatically when I renewed it online. But I think with my previous renewal 5 years ago they took the information requirements then (2 forms of ID etc.).

SSgt USMC/VetWife has , mine will be in the near future.
I think this is all BS. Should of always had to prove who you are.

shoevbMy wife and I got ours since we were up for renewal. A little bit of a hassle because they couldn't find proof of our marriage in the system and we had to come back with our marriage certificate for my wife to get hers. They are predicting a crush of people trying to get theirs at the last minute.

MagicHorseMy Mom reminded me of it when I went to renew my license this past year, when I looked, it already had the star on it so apparently they automatically gave it to me when I 1st moved to this state.
The way I understand it for my state, is it is free if it is time to renew your license and if it is not time & you just want to get the real I.D. ahead of time, they charge you $30.

In my experience, yes.
Probably does, but I believe the requirement for domestic commercial flights doesn’t go into effect until 1/1/2020, so experience prior to that date isn’t evidence.
I got a DL with Real ID last year.

fpuhanI was due for renewal. So, I got the Real ID even though I travel frequently and have a passport (both paper and card type).

henryaz When RealID was first being pushed (several years ago) AZ chose not to honor the mandate. Now that it's becoming required for some folks (who fly), AZ is offering an optional RealID for an additional $25. I got one last time I got a renewed DL just for grins, even though I will never fly again. (AZ drivers licenses are good, without renewal, until you reach age 65, and then you have to take the eye test every 5 years and get a renewed license).

BBMWGot it last time I renewed my DL (last year.) Was vastly more of a PITA than it should have been.

joel9507Got 'Real ID-ed' a couple years ago.
Wasn't hard and I needed a replacement anyway because my old wallet's windowed pouch had messed up the photo surface on the old one.

Mark in MichiganMy current DL is not compliant although Michigan has offered the upgrade for awhile. My DL will expire in late 2021. I suppose I will upgrade to Real ID DL then. Until then, I will use my US Passport as it is valid until 2025.
Best regards,
Mark in Michigan

Holger DanskeI got mine last year because I was going to be flying a lot and hadn't gotten around to renewing my passport. I couldn't find my social security card, but Louisiana allows you to substitute your DD-214. Seamless processing, then the lady behind the desk asked whether I wanted the "Veteran" notation on my DL. I didn't know such a thing was an option, and my first reaction was no, it seemed a bit much for what I had done, but then I thought, what the hell would it hurt. So there's that.

I do not have a SS card.
I have not had one for forty-five years, give or take a year. My wallet was stolen back then and I never bothered to get a replacement card. I have never needed one for anything. Nobody has ever asked to see it.
My DL is "Real ID," I brought my passport with me last time it was renewed. It also has the 'V' designator for Veteran, which saved me about fifty bucks when I bought an EGo mower from Home Depot.
When ID is required, for example at the medical lab where I go for blood draw, or any place in general for ID, I use my passport card. It has my name, my photo, and my date and place of birth. Nothing else.
I do not like to use Driver License for ID, much of the time my address is none of their business; it is on the DL but not on the passport card. No tin hat here, but I just do not like giving out any personal information that there is no legitimate reason for.

ensigmaticGeez, I'm glad the OP brought this up. It reminded me my CPL expires soon. Then I looked and realized my DL expires at the same time. Guess I best get a move on!

ChowserI got mine this year when I renewed. Was told I needed it to get on to military bases. Didn’t cost extra so I just got it.

BurtonRWMaryland started rolling them out after the act was signed when your license was renewed. The timing was right that I got one of the early ones. Didn't cost anything other than the standard renewal fee.
Then, last year, the feds apparently roll back the advice they gave the state about grandfathering RealID-compliant licenses, so even though our new licenses all bear the magic star, Maryland residents have basically been told to make an appointment and pay a visit with documents in-hand.
To their credit, our MVA has really done pretty well with the appointment system. I don't think it took me or Mrs.BurtonRW more than 30 minutes to walk in and out, having let them scan the documents.
No new license, mind you, the feds just told them they had to have the verification documents on file. Didn't cost anything.
