The wife is reluctant. She has a very small group of friends (basically one lady we grew up with and me) and is hesitant to allow anyone in. I'll show her this thread.

I am very patient, except when driving. Big Grin

SIG Academy offers such 'Women Only' Training Classes. My wife signed up for the 'Handgun 101' course several years ago which was scheduled on a Friday, and she liked it so much, she signed up for Handgun 102 & Handgun 103 while at the class and took them on the following two days that same weekend, so Saturday & Sunday! She had actually called me during the lunch break on Friday to see what I thought about the add'l classes and confirm whether we had any plans...Obviously I was all for it! Anyway, she 'really' enjoyed the courses, the facilities and the instructors. The courses were smaller in size (even smaller for Handgun 102 & 103), and like the title said, Women Only, so both the Students AND the Instructors were women!

As a bonus, I was NOT involved, so she was very receptive and relaxed during the training, and was ultimately quite proud of her results/proficiency...Highly Recommended! Wink

Here is what I don't get.

How do you prepare for the unknown ?

Wether it's political uprising, natural weather related disaster, criminal rioting, or just organized civil unrest gone mob mentality.

What degree of blood shed , mass murder or carnage are you predisposed to commit ?

And if you do stop six people from harming you and your wife or a neighbor,

Do you have a half million dollars in a coffee can saved up to pay the legal fee's , loss of employment, loss of home and life in the future?

Then there are the civil suits that follow.

What happens to the three dozen firearms, 9000 rounds of ammo etc. while you are awaiting trial?

Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.

Predisposed? I’m not. Mass murder? Zilch. Carnage? Nada.

Isn’t the whole point to do what we can so that others can’t murder us? I can be capable of anything and still be peaceful. Being incapable of violence isn’t peace-loving, it’s helplessness. I think Jordan Peterson said that.

I’ll worry about that after it never happens.

Totally unrelated to your original topic: the statement quoted above really struck me.

One of my great friends does a lot of volunteer work for some VERY worthy causes, and we were talking recently about his upcoming weekend "in prison" and some of the needs for the group. I couldn't help him directly, but offered to help fund some of the supplies. He was reluctant to take the cash for a moment, and then said something close to, "I won't deny you that blessing." It took me a moment to understand what he was saying -- it wasn't about a blessing toward me, rather it was about my already being blessed -- being able to offer the help to his group.

Anyway... I'm glad you're getting back into the sport/hobby/fun/learning. Enjoy, be safe, and keep learning. Smile

God bless America.

This was the last lesson my Grandfather taught me before he departed this world. I understand how it can be hard to accept and why we should do it.

It is a story my kids will be told one day because it is an incredible story.

I took a long hiatus from the pistol section (my favorite sub section of this forum) for similar reasons. Welcome back my friend. Smile

Let me simply quote for you something a friend of mine told me. He's a SWAT officer in a pretty, er... vibrant area. "If I have to kill you and everyone from here to Tacoma (3o miles at the time of the conversation) to save my daughter's life, well, that sucks but she comes first for me, period. I know as a responsible citizen, you'd do the same."

So, I guess to directly answer your question: it depends. If nobody is threatening violence on myself and my family, then we don't have to find out, which seems to me to be the ideal situation for everyone, involved or not.

Mark, I too have remained here for something wholly different from firearms. I'm not "into" them, as a general interest anymore. But I keep them for the same reasons one keeps a hammer, or a flashlight.

I still have a few firearms - , dusty, secured, ready? Wink (in all seriousness, I'm sure they are). And while I have for more ammunition than I'd need the remainder of my life in normal times (perhaps I shot 250 rounds at the range in the last five years), I do not have enough for calamity.

Calamity requires that I/we have enough to share with other good people. Force multiplier, right?

One thing I did do at some point in the past, is that I settled on 9x19 (and .22lr) as my only calibers. For a long run, I settled on a Ruger PC9 carbine. The assumption I'm making is that if it's 100 years away, it isn't my problem. You know western PA, Mark. You'd be hard pressed to find a visual field of view that reaches that far. So this makes my task ahead simple enough. Seek and find a few extra 9x19 boxes and bits.

I remember your career changes years back. You, Will, and I joked around a lot back then.

You programming, custom knives from Ron Leuschen that took a long time to get, his first marriage, you trying to sell a ring, his second wedding, and watching your son grow up.

Another place that has good ammo prices on sale is Natchez Shooter’s Supply. I like them even better when I can get discounted or free shipping (always watch the shipping cost)

Natchez Shooters Supply

Gun Mag Warehouse has some good prices on 9mm lately. I recently purchased several magazines from them for a good price.

Turns out the boss disappeared with about half a years wages and left me with a stack of bills. Before I quit, I had saved up about half a years expenses so I handled it until that dried up and it did dry up.

I had been a member of SIGforum for 8 years or so then so I had some firearms but I was forced to sell many of them to make the mortgage payments.

I just tell you all that because after selling guns and reloading stuff, it caused me to lose interest. If you could look back from 2010 until recently, all my posts were in the Lounge. I stayed here because of the quality of the membership and ownership, this place is very unique and I appreciate it here.

I can't say that it had anything to do with depression, I don't think that's it. However, I became very apathetic towards firearms. I stopped buying and I even stopped carrying.

Recently, talking to P220 Smudge, I mentioned that I wish I could have an AR-15 again as it's really the only rifle I've ever been interested in. He got me to build a decent but inexpensive Palmetto State Armory gun out of all BLEMs. I think it totaled around $370 which was easy to justify.

Building an AR-15 helped me to understand the inner workings better than I ever had before. They're very simple machines but I never had the chance to open one up before. This restarted my interest in firearms and it is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ed!

Today I read parabellum's thread "How are you fixed for ammunition?" and I've realized that I'm way behind. Not only in buying and stockpiling ammunition, but also in firearm knowledge and ability. These are perishable skills. Being safe and knowing what to do are easy to lose. I'm not ready in any way. I really appreciate the admonishment because it's something I really needed at this moment.

On top of that my wife bought her first gun this week and she wants me to teach her to shoot. Heck, I have to relearn myself first.

I need supplies, I need ammo, I need ideas and I need training. I'm going to most likely be asking some very basic questions and asking for leads on pricing on ammo so please bear with me. I feel like I'm new to this all over again.

Glad to see you’re getting back into things!

The wife and I joined the closest gun club. A good friend of mine is the range officer and the owner of my LGS of choice is the president. The only downside is they don’t allow rifles at the indoor range. I can deal with that though.

I’m not sure. I don’t see it on the map. Do you have a zip code?

Wherever you’re talking about, I’m probably as far from it as possible and still be in PA. Big Grin

That’s about 340 miles away. I’m way over on the other side by the PA/OH line.

Mark, my wife is a member of Armed Women of America. This group was formerly named "The Well-armed Woman", and is a group of female shooters of various skill levels and interests. Mrs. A's participation in this group has added a tremendous boost to her interest in, and knowledge of firearms and shooting. Enough so that she has attained certification as an NRA Instructor and RSO. They appear to have a chapter in Monongahela which, while not exactly "close," shouldn't be too far from your locale.

Maybe you could ask your wife for a holster suggestion that’s comfortable for a lady. My wife’s gun is a Glock 43.

Mark,

I still have your Kimber Target II in 10mm.

I never shoot it as I found I am not a fan of the 1911 platform. I will sell it back to you for what I paid if you are interested. I will even throw in the couple of extra mags I purchased.

I was just thinking of that one. IIRC, you also bought my IMI Baby Eagle 9mm … Or was it a Keltec P3AT? You really helped me through a hard time back then. I’ll send you an email.
