If I'm only getting a handful of items, I don't mind going through the self checkout.
If I have 75 items in my cart, no way. Had a Kroger employee tell me there was a self
checkout line open. I asked her how much of a discount I would get. She turned around
and walked away.

I don't shop often at Walmart. I hate their meat and produce, but there's a couple things I go there specifically for every couple of months. I do like their self-checkout better than their old system of 90% closed checkout and long lines at the few open.

For the most part my Texas grocer's, HEB, cashiers are like Chick-fil-A cashiers so it's a pleasure to check out with them. Additionally:
  • they actually value their customer so they have multiple lines open, the manager is visibly present monitoring what is happening, and the manager will even jump on a cash register if a rush of customers arrives at once.
  • their meat and produce are heads and tails above Walmart or other grocery stores nearby.

I’m simply not a fan of Wally World, I just don’t like the business practices and some times the clientele is pretty iffy ….

I use self checkout whenever possible. I’m faster than most cashiers and I don’t have to say no to every question about extended warranties, donating to charity, loyalty cards, etc, etc.

Here at the Yooper grocery store there are two types of check out lanes. One has a bagger and the rest you bag your stuff yourself. The clerk will see me in the bagger lane and say "the other check out is open". I respond with "no thanks, at these prices you can bag my stuff".

I’d be a lot more inclined to “like” self- checkout if by doing so a percentage was knocked off the total due.

I like the Sams club app checkout mentioned above. Scan as you shop pay on your phone and walk to the door. I like to shop at Costco but they are behind the times with checkout. They do not have the checkout app, the just recently added some self check out registers which wouldn't be so bad except, they have no counter space to put your items on and they have no handheld scan guns. We all know that when you shop at Costco you have a mountain of items in your cart, it is a bitch to scan that 150 roll pack of toilet paper and the 60lb bag of coffee beans over the little glass window scanner. If any store should have scan guns it is Costco. The supervisor folks that come over to help sometimes have the scan guns and can scan directly in the cart so the system is in place they just don't provide them for the customers to use.

I have the Amex Platinum Delta Airmiles Card and I can't find any mention of this benefit. Can you give me any pointers?

I am fine with the self checkout at wally world. Much less waiting in line, and I can bag it in as few bags as possible. I am not too lazy to do it myself and I never did like the amount of bags the checkers used for my items. Like most things, I prefer to do it myself.

My local Costco does indeed have hand held cordless scanners on all the self check out lanes.

I have the same Delta Amex Platinum card. I think we can't find it because it's a co-branded card. This may only be available with the regular Amex platinum. I signed up using my Amex card. Guess I'll find out after January 9 whether the co-branded card works too

I always pick the prettiest cashier. That’s why I use self-checkout.

I particularly like the one at Lowe’s. It has a camera so I can check myself out while I’m checking myself out.

Maybe I should've been a roper.... When I walk up to the machine, the goal is to scan my items, get my card scanned, and get my items bagged and cleared before anyone around me gets theirs done. Big Grin

Not all self check out equipment is created equal. Some is decent and allows you to scan items at a decent pace, and some is painfully slow and is incredibly annoying.

If they offered the same system cashiers got to use which allow multiple items to be input, or if they offered a tangible discount for using the self check option, I would be more inclined to use these.

They're currently too annoying for the most part and don't offer me any financial advantage to do the store's job for them.

I'm sure the ability to self-scan items with your phone is convenient, but don't unscrupulous people cheat?

Regarding the self-scan machines, I invariably have problems using them. I refuse to do so now.
