Not how it works. One is eligible or ineligible. He’s on the ineligible list. Just like Shoeless Joe. Death doesn’t get one off of the ineligible list.

bdylanDeath can easily get you off the ineligible list... the death of the commissioner. It's a silly little system where you have to kiss the commissioners ass to get reinstated. Maybe the next commissioner will let Pete into the hall.

So that's all that is needed to get into the baseball hall of fame...the commissioner's approval?

No. One has to meet the eligibility requirements to be considered and then get 75% of the vote. The commissioner would have to remove Rose from the ineligible list. Then the writers could take up his candidacy. The current commissioner met with Rose and decided to keep him on the ineligible list.

ulstermanRose was a hell of a player.
He's the only one to blame for not being in the Hall of Fame.
He lied, 15 year later, he finally told the truth.
Then he continued to bet. Probably up until the day he died.
Sex with a teenager didn't help him.
I hope he vanquished his demons.

bigwagonThe BBHOF is a private entity and makes its own selection rules, not MLB, but they have chosen to not allow players on the MLB permanently ineligible list to be considered for induction. They could change the rule if they really wanted to induct Rose (or Shoeless Joe), but they probably don't want to get sideways with MLB.

Not exactly. Cooperstown has their own governing body MLB does not make the rules in regard to HOF eligibility Cooperstown does.
A few weeks back I watched the recently released documentary about Pete Rose on Max (it’s quite good it’s very fair and highlights both the good and bad).
It’s touched on very quickly but the MLB states that Cooperstown is the one with the final decision and it does not matter if hat the MLB says. Cooperstown makes their own rules.
Maybe that’s the MLB’s way of passing the buck and not removing Rose’s ban.
However the MLB has allowed Pete to partake in many MLB sanctioned activities in the last 10 or so years.
So a lifetime ban from baseball it has not fully been.

bcereuss Ban liftedIn an absolutely stunning decision, Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred has reversed the lifetime bans that would prevent 'Shoeless' Joe Jackson and Pete Rose from being voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Rose and Jackson had been placed on the 'permanently ineligible' list to be enshrined in Cooperstown by MLB for decades due to accusations of gambling on their own team's games.
Now, both Jackson and Rose are set to potentially be voted into the Hall of Fame after years of petitioning to allow either of them to be included.-more at linky

Black92LXIt’s not stunning at all everyone knew it was going to happen.
However he is a complete dick for not doing it while Pete was alive which he absolutely could have and should have.

bdylanThe Hall of Fame can gain some legitimacy now when they enshrine the all-time hit king. Nauseating that baseball couldn't see fit to throw Pete a bone while he was still alive.
