Bill Targets School Riflery

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- A New York lawmaker is taking aim at riflery and archery programs in schools, contending they promote a "gun culture."

Manhattan Democrat Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal says she introduced her bill to ban such programs in the state after it was revealed that the Parkland, Florida, school shooting suspect had honed his shooting skills in a marksmanship program at the very school where he's accused of killing 17 people.

Backers of such programs say they foster concentration, patience and self-discipline, attributes that carry over to the classroom.

There are an estimated 5,000 gun clubs at high schools and universities around the country. Last year New York state had 28 high school air riflery teams that fire pellets, with 266 participants.

Yes, because archery is such a violent sport. This has been making the rounds of the archery community as well. If anything it's pulled some to our side of the argument. Some who previously thought gun control did not affect them now realize that the controlling aspect of it reaches well past the gun community.

Has she considered banning driver ed classes? Think of the lives that could be saved if we kept teenagers from driving. Think of the children!

And meanwhile in Tennessee:

HB2550 Requires Board of Education to Develop Firearms Education Course

Tennessee had a huge second amendment win in April that got very little mainstream news coverage. On May 3rd Governor Haslam signed HB2550 into law. This bill requires the State Board of Education to develop a firearms education course as an elective for high school students. The course will include history, mathematics and the science related to firearms along with firearms safety. Representative Dawn White from Murfreesboro and Senator Dolores Gresham with District 26 in Mid-West Tennessee sponsored this bill.

This is great news for Tennessee High School students who will soon have the opportunity to choose to learn more about the mechanics behind firearms and proper safety techniques as part of their curriculum. We hope the demand for this class will encourage our lawmakers to expand this bill to include firearms education and safety to our middle schools and even elementary schools. Safety education saves lives.

Kids Summer Camp Opportunity:

If you have a 5th-9th grade student interested in shooting sports and looking for summer activities Tennessee Shooting Sports teams up with the UT Extension 4-H program to present Target Smart Camp every summer. This is a long weekend overnight camp at the W.P. Ridley 4-H Center in Columbia, TN. Kids get to choose a focus for the weekend from archery, hunting, Rifle/BB, Shotgun or Muzzleloader. This is a great opportunity for your kids to get some range time with a qualified instructor and increase their knowledge and skill with firearms.

When I was in high school in 1950 we has a rifle team that used to practice in the school basement. When I went into service the training was very helpful. Taught me to survive.

Same in the 1980's - we had a Jr. ROTC Rifle team at my high school that used M14's with the blue practice rounds.
I remember the team Captain ended up going to West Point and graduating 3rd in his class.

Maybe the moron should get the details first...

Former JROTC cadets told The Associated Press that Cruz was a member of the small varsity marksmanship team that trained together after class and traveled to other area schools to compete.

So they are anti ROTC?? What will happen when it comes out and they paint that idiot ass anti military?

I shot on my high school (Fishburne Military School) rifle team for many years. Loved it

All Cadets are required to qualify small (Remington match grade 22) and large bore (1903 Springfield’s) each year

It’s currently and has been one of the most popular programs at the school

My high school had a marksmanship team, too, but I took a pass. Single-shot rifles firing .22 shorts? I was better-armed than that, just with my father's leftovers!

Nothing to do with being armed

Taught me breathing and trigger control, patience, self restraint

100 rds in various shooting positions for score, in an area the size of a 22 projectile glass consistently

Not easy. 100th of an inch mattered for a win or loss individual or for team

I disagree. It has everything to do with being comfortable an confident around firearms, which I was from about age 7. Demonizing firearms, as I'm sure you realize, is a constant goal of the Progs in their plan to disarm us.

Whether you learn marksmanship as a Boy Scout Merit Badge, or on a high school team, or from one's father, all that matters is that you learn. The finer skills are less relevant.
