A U.S. Navy submarine sank an Iranian frigate with a single torpedo as it transited the Indian Ocean, the Pentagon said Wednesday. The strike occurred on Tuesday night amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran.
According to officials, the U.S. submarine targeted the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena while it was operating in international waters, roughly 40 nautical miles south of Galle, Sri Lanka.
The Pentagon said the attack marks the first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II. “It was sunk by a torpedo — quiet death,” War Secretary Pete Hegseth said. “We’re just getting started.”
“For the first time since 1945, a United States Navy fast attack submarine has sunk an enemy combatant ship using a single Mk-48 torpedo to achieve immediate effect, sending the warship to the bottom of the sea,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine said.

Maybe, but I thought the first sinking of a warship by a submarine since WWII was pretty significant.

sigfreundAs reported in the other thread, there have been two prior sinkings of warships by submarine torpedoes since World War II.
https://sigforum.com/eve/forum...600087915#2600087915The more well-known incident happened in the war between the UK and Argentina and was widely reported at the time. When the SECWAR said this one was the first sinking of an enemy warship since WW II, perhaps he was referring to the first sinking by a US submarine. Or perhaps he was not aware of history.

MikeinNCMK48 FTW!!
I had to learn the MK48 as the Coast Guard had launchers at the time, they were a deck launched set of three tubes that could be swung outboard for launch. then Admiral Yost took over and did away with beards and the torpedos and the ASROC and the towed array for anti sub. So I’m excited so one got to send one, and it worked!

Servicing the torpedo systems on attack subs was part of my job in the shipyards.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Decked launched Mk48's...? surely you meant Mk46 or the newer Mk54 for surface launched fish?
