I've got one of the original Ipads not much memory, a basic model that I bought my wife years ago and she refused to use, so I commandeered it and use it in the Man Cave to read the interweb, email, text, a couple of apps nothing other than that.

Its slowed down and occasionally reboots itself on certain apps or web pages figured might as well replace it.

I'm not going to buy one of the latest greatest super retna mega memory geewizbanger Ipads, since it's just used to browse the net.

I have found some Refurbs available, Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 4 and the Gen 1 Air. Other than processor speed from the Gen 1 Air to the Gen 4 is it really fast enough to warrant $80 more spent on the Air vs the Gen 4

Weight isn't an issue, it sits in a case on my chair arm in a stand, I don't carry it anywhere, my Iphone 7plusdoes that stuff just fine.

Heck they even have a Gen 2 with 64 for $160 which might do the trick, basically want it to be able to see the internet without rebooting or locking up all the other features, camera etc I never use on the thing...

Is there anything tying you specifically to the Apple ecosystem? For the light use you seem to put it through, you could probably replace it with an Amazon Fire tablet (8" or 10") for far less money and it would likely do everything you need it to do. I'm thinking about replacing an old Samsung tablet with a 10" Fire tablet. If not the Fire tablet, how about a Samsung Tab A?

There was some talk about refurbs in an earlier thread.

When I looked for some online, there were all sorts of horror stories about missing features, inops in some parts, performance not up to par. Some seemed to work better in Japanese etc.

Be careful. The cheapest oats often have already been run through the horse.

The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

I have purchased Apple refurbs stuff before and never had an issue.

If you are stuck on an iPad then look on Apple or site like Gazelle and Swappa...because "new" models were released there should be some deals on gently used old ones. Just make sure you get something that is compatible with IOS 11 which I htink the air 2 is.

I would get the 2018 IPad. It is the cheaper version they currently sale vs the iPad Pro. This will last your for years with lots of storage. Should be able to get it shipped to your door under 400. You could wait until the iPad X comes out later this year and these will be super cheap. IPad Air 2 are great too if you can find one. They should be much cheaper still.

This is my recommendation also. Newer websites have more content so a new machine is best, and I saw these for $369 somewhere, but can't remember where.

I have a IPAD PRO 12.9" as well, but bought this strictly to watch streaming tv and movies on while traveling and is overkill for your needs.

Best Buy has them for $50 off. $280 isn't a bad deal.

Another vote for the $329 iPad. Having had an android tablet in the past, you won’t be happy with anything but an iPad. Trust me.

One of the issues with getting an older model is that OS and application updates may not be available anymore. iPad 4 didn't get any iOS updates for a while, and is stuck on iOS 10.x. Also had some apps that wouldn't update any longer. If all you do is browse the web, it may not be relevant.

OTOH, a new 2018 32GB iPad can be had for $325 + tax, shipped from Costco.com.

This is a deal. I would do this and be done with it. I may pick one up myself.

My Air 2 is losing battery life. I would get the latest standard if you can. The Pro is nice too but quite the jump.

I'm pretty sure this is the same thing as my 32GB 2017 9.7" iPad. Mine and my wife's have each been doing fine since we bought them at Costco, for $320 ea., nearly a year ago. I just upgraded mine to iOS 11.3. It seems to like it well enough. I'll upgrade my wife's iPad tomorrow.

I use mine for a lot more than just browsing.

$280 is a steal.

This, btw, is the device that finally persuaded me away from Android. I wanted to get away from Android, anyway. We saw these at Costco. Bought one just to give it a spin, so to say. Liked it so much, after just 48 hours, that we bought a second, then a pair of iPhones to replace our Android phones, then an Apple Watch for me, to replace my Android watch.

I never in a million years thought I'd become an iHead, but here I am Razz

I haven't seen the thread that you refer to, but I have a shiny new nickel to bet, that says it was a third-party refurb, not a refurb purchased directly from Apple.

My experience with Apple refurbs has been that other than cost and some discrete words on the package, they are 100% indistinguishable from new. Apple gives them the same warranty as new retail.

I think that one form Best Buy is an on older model than what's offered now for $329. The BB one has an A9 chip vs A10 in the newer one and I don't think the BB version is compatible with the pencil. I know many would say I don't need the pencil, but I think it's a cool deal even for just screwing around.

I'm in the same boat with my old ipad and I'm probably going to get the new one @ 329. Apple is offering some trade in value for some of the older iPads but you have to go to an Apple store to see what they will give you for what you have.

Could be if it is too good to be true. In that case, I still recommend the 2018 iPad from the apple website for 329. Either one will fit the bill.

Today my wife received her new, refurbished, 2017, 128 GB iPad. It was $309 as the following.

https://www.apple.com/shop/pro...-Fi-128GB-Space-Gray

Much, much faster then her old iPad Air that was only 16 GB.

If you can afford the $280, then try to afford the 2018 for $329. It is worth the $50.

Eh. He's only using it for light-weight apps. Mine has the A9 and it sure seems fast enough to me. Maybe I'm just easy.
