Interesting RING incident. Local d**kheads are walking up to RING (and similar) and covering the lens with a hat/paper/hand, ring the bell - hoping that someone will wonder what is wrong with the device. Happened to me as I was coming down stairs. I could see the guys from the upstairs window and yanked the door open - with a 'WTF are you doing - and my Sig P229/40 in my hand - as well as being 6ft/245 weightlifter. Guys didn't say a thing and bolted. I called the police and alerted them of the roaming trash. Under normal circumstances we don't bother answering......

This is why I like having redundancy backup. I have a hard wired camera system I installed that records on a digital recorder in my house and the cameras can be seen on a monitor in my office or remotely via an app. One of the cameras is up high out of reach at the front door looking down on the door. The I have a doorbell camera, not Ring as I don’t want to pay a subscription and record the video to an SD card, because I wanted to be able to capture good face images. Then I have a third camera that is pan/tilt with motion tracking that also sees the front door and is up high. That is just the front door coverage and then I have many of both types of cameras all around the exterior of my home. I have one Ring floodlight camera in addition to another camera that monitors the vehicles in my driveway. All emit IR so at night with so many cameras, everything is very well lit in the dark.

Same here but our storm door locks and would be very loud breaking through it. I think the pups give you a warning? We get a buzz when someone is approaching our front door (Motion sensors). Pups are the best.

I had one show up at my door today. Lady pretending to be deaf.

When I opened the door she had her phone taking my picture.

Just closed the door. She then went to the neighbors and knocked on their door

I snapped a picture of her license plate and vehicle - sent it to the sheriff.

I do agree, if things are questionable, get a picture of the vehicle and license plate.

So here are three different views of my front door area. I really like the doorbell camera I got as it gets a good facial picture compared to my overhead camera and it is WAY less expensive than a Ring doorbell camera.

Overhead view from old wired camera.

View of him ringing doorbell.

Knocking on door when I didn’t answer right away with three no soliciting signs.

View from my other camera in case someone knocks on door and hides around corner with how my front door is setup.

Every camera I have records 24/7 and not on motion except my Ring driveway floodlight camera. All of my cameras that record 24/7 notate when motion was detected and allow me to go to those moments and will send me notifications of motion with a still image if I want.

I just installed a TP-Link doorbell.

Has a slot for a Micro SD card to record, no subscription required.

Id like to know more about the equipment you're using. I've been around some of the Wyze and Simplisafe systems, but so far I don't think either of them records 24/7. The team I'm working with is interested in a setup that records full-time, and the recording is local (not cloud-based). Thank you!

God bless America.

All my cameras record 24/7 also. I use Hikvision IP cameras recording to a PC with Blue Iris software. I keep about 30 days of video before it overweights. Also have remote access via phone, iPad, or Pc. Took some time to get everything setup but it has been pretty much maintenance free the past 3 years.

I have Amcrest POE cameras throughout the outside of the house. You only have to run cat6 ethernet cable to them so it makes things very easy. And if you have a spare PC or build a cheapish one get blue iris software. It's very cheap, fairly easy to use and works with almost all POE cameras.

As for the Ring camera subscription. I believe that's only required if you want them to store the video for you. If you just want real time viewing/answering I'm fairly certain it's free.

My wired cameras are still coaxial cable and I use an Alibi DVR. The cameras are a mishmash of brands but higher resolution than your typical camera due to the DVR. The cameras are a hybrid between analog and IP. The other cameras are Wyze. They record 24/7 to an SD card you insert into the camera and it hold about 3 weeks of 24/7 video on a 256GB SD card. I can use the app to review video or look for times there was either sound or motion. You can also turn them on to automatically follow something moving. After that movement ends, it goes back to its original position. You can get the video from the SD card either by “recording” it to your iPad or iPhone via the app, or pull the SD card and put it into a computer. The only issue I have with Wyze is that sometimes they will lose Wi-Fi connection and either eventually it will restore or you have to power cycle it to restore but it is still recording when it doesn’t have Wi-Fi.

This is the Wyze cameras I use. You can’t go wrong at $37 for what it does. Then you just have to buy the SD card.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, assuming your dog will bark to let you know if anyone approaches. In addition, I would add steel bars to the storm door for reinforcement, and I would keep it locked at all times (unless you have a family member expected who can let themselves in), especially if you want to have the inside door open.

Y'all live in some dangerous neighborhoods to feel the need to be armed out in your yard.

About half the homes in this neighborhood are part time residents, which makes those homes more of a target than my home. Yet I have never heard of a break-in here. Only some minor vandalism of landscaping by the indigenous wildlife.

I don’t consider my “yard” particularly dangerous, though there are deer, coyotes, mountain lions, skunks, badgers, and the occasional black bear. I’m always armed in the yard, just like I’m usually armed in the house, as if I’m dressed I’m armed. Don’t have to wonder about where the pistol is that way. With a good holster from RGrizzle Leather, the p229 rides very comfortably and it feels really strange to be dressed without it there.

I am aware that the world is dangerous and full of malevolent people. Around here the highest percentage threat other than motor vehicle accident would be coming across a moose while in my yard or walking around the neighborhood. Though the chance of a violent person targeting me while I am in my yard or inside my home is non-zero, it is so close to zero as to be a risk I am willing to take. I also don't carry a rifle in my yard in case of moose encounter.

I wouldn't voluntarily live in a neighborhood where the risk of attack in my yard in daylight hours was so high it felt prudent to carry a firearm all the time.

Not so when I go out to a store, hike a trail, camping, etc. I am armed in those situations.

My Grandmother was beaten to death by a roaming crackhead, where you live has nothing to do with the shitbags gravitating to you.

For what it’s worth, she lived in a quiet golf course community, Babe Zaharias in Tampa with a low crime rate
