They’d only spend 35¢ on a cup of straight black, or purchase a single donut hole anyway.
There’s free donuts in an old flour bag out back by the dumpster.

You can argue all day about the economics of whether in today’s social media driven society if this is smart business. Who cares though? Will this DD really go out of business because of this? Buy something or leave. Simple.
You are right that one should not have to post a sign stating something that is obvious, but in today's society what is obvious to most is not so to some, and it costs very little to post a sign.

Nobody wants to hear or read anything that conflicts with what they want. Post a sign that says, “Get your free <whatever> here.” and all of a sudden everyone can read.
