Yeah, but my $5000 pickup wasn't crammed in the woods like the $60,000 Audi.

I laughed at plenty of northern transplant "expert drivers.

Well, I lived in it for 20+ years and I still wound up in the ditch once or twice a year up there. There are no "experts" when it comes to snow/ice.

My 2wd Ranger won't make it up my driveway.
I need to go to Tractor supply and pick up stuff to rebuild my chicken coop.
The snow collapsed it in. All but destroyed it.
I hope the roads aren't too icy for the CR-V.
We have almost no road service way up here.

In the MOUNTAINS.

I get it, the problem isn't the snow, it's the layer of ice which forms at the boundary between the initially probably warm-ish road and cold snow. We get that a lot in lower Michigan with snow storms that hit before the ground has frozen, and after spring thaw.

I don't use chains, but I also am not driving on much in the way of grades at any point in my normal travels. Add a couple of decent grades which can't be avoided, and I'd be considering that option also.

I hope you survived this treacherous weather.

After following this thread a bit, I still can't tell if you put them on as a joke or not.

As a transplanted Yankee I've learned a thing or two about snow down here.
First and last lesson, stay inside and wait for the 70 degree weather that follows a day or so later.
The chains really look silly in those conditions.

That would slow down rush hour and increase travel time by about 30min here in MN. The DOT trucks wouldn't even plough it, they'd just sand and salt the roads.

I actually prefer a lot of snow to drive in rather than an inch of sticky slush. Out in the western part of MN, the highways will close down if it starts to blizzard due to the wind and zero visibility.

It might not be a lot of snow, but it sure does look pretty where you are, Mars. Be safe

That's mostly poor driving. People get 4WD or AWD, get to thinking they're invulnerable, drive stupidly, end up in the ditch. Or worse.

I learned my lesson early, and cheaply, when I, too, thought 4WD was all that and ended-up meeting a traffic sign. (To make things worse: I was on a date.)

4WD and AWD can actually make control more difficult, because of applying power to all four wheels. People don't understand that.

The downhill thing... Many years ago, first winter I had my Honda CR-V, we had a power incident at work during a horrendous night time winter storm. White-out conditions. Freezing-ass cold. There's was this one part of my route that's a couple hundred yards of a fairly steep grade, and I had to go down it. As I approached the top, cautiously, I looked and saw glaze all the way down--shoulder and all. Applied the brakes gently. ABS kicked in immediately and continued ABSing all the way down. I ended-up stopped about a car length into the intersection. Backed up and pulled over into the right turn lane while I waited for the light to cycle.

If I hadn't been cautious. If I'd hit the top of that grade at anything more than a fast crawl, I would've slid right through that intersection... well, until I collided with cross-traffic.

We're getting some pretty good snow, right now. I'm glad I don't have to drive in it, especially during rush hour, any more.

I always used to take vacation days on the first one or two snowfalls of the season. Just so as not to be on the road with all the people that'd never driven in snow before and all the id10ts that had, but forgot how.
