I was at K.I. Sawyer when it happened. It hit the Yoopers hard. And ironically, we had a November gale today. About 6 inches of snow at my place, much more to the west and east. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

I've relayed this story before, but I was an engineering cadet on the SS Middletown during the summer of 1979. The Middletown was the sister ship the Fitz, both sailing for Columbia Steamship Company. Many of the crew I sailed with had had friends on the Fitz when she went down four years before. I remember listening to the radio reports that November. Every time I go to the Great Lakes I think of that fateful night, and it still raises the hair on my arms. Never be more than one step away from your sword-Old Greek Wisdom
