When I was a kid in the 80s and early 90s Stuckey’s were everywhere and the place that you wanted to stop on road trips.
Pecan Logs were their schtick and those blue roofs you knew you were close.
It’s Memorial Day weekend and we went down to the cabin and decorated the family graves. Weather cut our trip short.
We stopped at Buc-ee’s on the way home. It was mayhem but enjoyable as always. They are expanding like crazy and you are seeing more and more of them.

Made me think how Buc-ee’s is for my kids as what Stuckey’s was for me. Now that I am grown Stuckey’s is no more.
Wonder how long Buc-ee’s will hang on.

I remember going down the highway, hoping that the next Howard Johnson's really would have the advertised 38 flavors.

Interesting story about Stuckey's with the granddaughter working to rebuild the company.

Buc-ees is moving into central VA. They are going on the opposite side of 64 from Loves. I forget the pump count but it is about half the pumps the entire state would need if everyone filled up at the exact same time.

We do NOT like the establishment. At previoius stops in SC, we have tried the place three times. Food quality is low. Ticky tacky merchandise is for sale. Long long lines to the restrooms. Even the men's. Impossibly long lines at the interchange, with cars and trucks backed up from the interstate across the bridge to the entrance redlight, with equal delay exiting the Buc-ees.

You might say "you went on a holiday weekend, what did you expect?" Well, I travel on holiday weekends. I need places to stop that are efficient, reliable, and worth my money.

They will either adapt or die. I don't see any K-Marts around here, and the malls are all dead or dying.

Buccees is hot now, and that is all about one can hope for. No business is too big to fail.

I dunno, I love the fudge, I love the fresh chopped BBQ sammiches, I love the beef jerky, the toilets are always clean, and since I'm in the coastal bend of Texas, they're everywhere and the only really crowded one near me is in Luling.

God bless clean toilets and Beaver Nuggets.

I remember Stuckeys way back in the late 60’s and 70’s. Also Howard Johnson’s. Great hot dogs and corn toastees.

Stuckey's is greatly reduced from their peak of over 300 stores, but is not defunct, according to Wikipedia and their own website.

I was always kind of amazed at the bee colony they all had, right around the corner from the front doors. They always had fresh, utterly local honey for sale. You could look at 'em doing thier thing through plexiglass from inside.

They just opened a new Buc-ees in Colorado. Exit 252 off of I-25 north of Denver. The place was a zoo on opening day. Folks are driving for 2-3 hours just to visit it. Crazy...

I'm not sure it's a fair comparison, although
I barely remember Stuckey's. Dad was too cheap
to stop at restaurants. Sandwiches A-La-A
Clark Griswold variety.

As I remember back in the day the Stuckey"s were located along major highways between major cities that most people traveled because the "interstate highway system" if it existed in your area it was in the early stages of getting built...But with the growing interstate system bypassing so many cities and towns that a lot of attractions disappeared................................... drill sgt.

When our economics impact their retail plan.

Right now people have no shortage of money ,it's coming out of thin air.

When they have to shop within their financial means , they will shop elsewhere.

I drove up to Johnstown to drop a graduation card to my daughter for her husbands nephew. I had the genius idea of meeting at the Buc-ees thinking it would be an opportunity to check it out. Fuck that shit. It was insane how many cars were in that lot. When she got there we went across the highway to where the new Murdochs is. Immediate stress level decline and the Murdochs has a nice gun counter. Well stocked with handguns and the ammo shelves were full.

Not till those lines complained about in the above posts go away, assuming they do. Wink

Never been to one. NIMBYs here chased one away that was going to be local, so they are opening a few exits West, closer to a larger town.
