Same thought here. They could write DUIs all night long setting up at the right spot.

That Bar, and its suppliers, pay a lot of taxes. Most non violent laws are revenue producing schemes. They have to balance the take.

Was sitting in a Bar in Southern Indiana, a couple decades ago, with a good friend from NOLA. Big Bday party, and we were designated drivers. When the bartender flashed the lights for "Last Call", my friend ask me what that means. I explain the mandatory closing time law in that State. He says, " They want all the drunks on the road at the same time???"

Over forty years ago it was just before closing on a Saturday night at our favorite watering hole when the town cop came in - they only had one besides the chief.

He goes up to the owner behind the bar and says, "Shut out the lights and don't let anybody leave. The state men (State Police) are setting up a roadblock 1/4 mile down the road." Owner complied.

45 minutes later the town cop was back to tell us the coast was clear.

It was a different time.

OVI checkpoints here in Ohio but they have to follow certain laws. Biggest one being that they have to inform the public where they are setting up. When known, people just avoid them.

I was pulled over earlier this week on the way home from work at night by a County Sheriff's deputy. Suspicion of drunk driving. Used a tactic that some of my LEO friends told me about. Came charging up in his vehicle behind me as I was driving. Told that they gauge how you react as to what they'll do. I didn't speed up or slow down but got pulled over anyways. Kind of pissed as I was on my way home.

I'd rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I'm not.

If checkpoints for warrantless stops are fine then why not just go door (public or private) looking for a crime?

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe that in some states if a road block inspection is set up for DUI/insurance/ dvr liscense/ vehicle saftey sticker/etc that ALL vehicles must be stopped and checked.. And by ALL means not a hit and miss (selective) stopping by letting some pass thru without checking............... Do not answer any questions... Do not help them with their investigation.. Make them do their job without your help.. Do not say anything that would encourage them to begin "fishing" for reasons to incriminate yourself....If at all possible have a dash camera or cell phone and record the interaction with the police ..... This recording might come in handy later if needed in a courtroom to prove your innoncence or the overstepping the legal/illegal actions of the police.......... Now do not think that I hate the police and that I am anti-police but in fact very pro police and if fact some years ago was actual police officer who worked in my home town. Just hate the police officers be they city/parish(county)/or state level that do not know the laws and try and use their power to do what they want/ when they want/ anytime that they want.. They are not "feelings enforcer" but need to be "law enforcers"....................... drill sgt.

Always hated these things, for various reasons.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Ummm, nope Roll Eyes

It honestly was two beers

I’m not a big drinker to begin with and two beers is pretty much all I do these days.

But tell a cop that and next thing you know they’ve got you pulled out of your car and walking backwards on tiptoe or whatever other silly crap they want you to do.

I’m 100% pro police, but this SHIT should be illegal. This is Soviet Union type stuff, not American.

I despise those roadblock checkpoints as well.

I drive on I95 from St. Augustine FL to Daytona FL and back every day.

I’m in a company vehicle that’s GPS’ed.

I’m about ready to start wearing an adult diaper due to the mother-fers driving like they are in some fictional movie.

Where the F are the troopers?

Doing something that makes the state more money no doubt.

It should be illegal.

The problem I think is that drunk driving and its horrific repercussions are somewhat epidemic in this country. Goes back to no common courtesy, respect or consideration for your follow neighbors.

I generally believe that infringements are not worth the safety it supposedly brings. The quote by BFranklin is a key tenet.

That being said, something needs to be done. In my daily life, the one thing that I believe poses the most risk to my life and health are the people who aren't paying attention while driving. The probability of dying from unnatural causes is highest for this by a far margin.

The thing is that most people willingly hand over PC for further investigation by talking. You don't have to answer any questions whatsoever. But 99.9% of people want to talk their way out of something or be cooperative, which just leads to trouble. You don't have to perform field sobriety tests either, but almost no one refuses them.

You have to be a serious non-thinking asshole to get behind the wheel under the influence. You don't drive DUI by accident-it is a conscious act. Two beers over a 4-hour period are not going to get you anywhere near the legal limit. Although every drunk I ever arrested only had two beers by his own account.

The amount of death and human suffering caused by drunk drivers is atrocious. Ask any first responders and ER staff or ME's who see the result firsthand on a daily basis. I worry about my loved ones being hit by a drunk driver, or other idiot behind a wheel, whenever they are on the road. If you don't drive under the influence an occasional checkpoint is a non-issue.

There are some specific legal constraints a DUI checkpoint must meet. Most agencies will advertise in local media when and where they are going to be. In my experience the checkpoints are more of a public education effort than anything, but the checkpoints almost always net some drivers who are two or three times or more over the legal limit, and that's the guy you are after. They are usually in response to an uptick of DUI crashes. In Florida by the way the third DUI becomes a felony.

If the government really wanted to stop intoxicated drivers they would implement vehicle forfeitures for first time offences. 5 years drivers license revocation.

Second offence: mandatory 3 year prison sentence and lifetime ban on driving.

I wish they spent the time they spend stopping everyone at a "check point", instead pulling over people driving erratically, on their damn phones, cluelessly driving in the left lanes holding people up especially trucks, and any number of other poor driving behavior. And when they do if they smell alcohol, pot, whatever, proceed with that as well.
Just pulling over people who are driving correctly to fish for an offense seems wrong and a waste of resources to boot.

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.
