Until the controversy, I never knew that Ft Bragg or Ft Benning were named after Confederate generals. I like this solution. The name is returned to the familiar, but pays tribute to a uniting figure.
I am a Southerner, and can trace back to ancestors that fought and died for the CSA, but I don't think it is proper to offer tribute to leaders of what was a foreign nation in the naming of a US military base.
Maybe I am wrong to look at it this way, and my SF brothers here can set me straight.
