Restoring the name to Fort Bragg Login/Join

They changed the name back to Ft. Bragg today. For all of us who served there, “Bragg” is an iconic name. This is not because of any Confederate general, but rather because the name came to signify excellence and a hardcore mentality. When I was stationed there it was the only Army base that had a 4 mile run standard. Every other base had a 2 mile standard. More was and is demanded of the paratroopers and special forces operators stationed there. No veteran I know was in favor of changing the name to Ft. Liberty for whatever DEI reason they gave and I hope they’ll change the name of Fort Benning back to its original name as well.

Thanks to the new Defense Secretary for understanding that to those who serve and served there that restoring the name was something we were hoping for.

All The Way!

It's the same last name, but the person being honored is no longer the Confederate general Braxton Bragg, but it's Roland Bragg, a WWII hero.

quote:
The base was originally named in 1918 for Gen. Braxton Bragg, a Confederate general from Warrenton, North Carolina, who was known for owning slaves and losing key Civil War battles that contributed to the Confederacy's downfall.

The new name pays tribute to Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a World War II hero who earned the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his exceptional courage during the Battle of the Bulge.

It's always been Fort Bragg to me.

My son is currently at Fort Benning. Not even sure what the new name is. He told me Benning so I would know where he was.

I'd like Ft. Benning to be the name of where where we trained and went to jump school.

That's going to be a tougher one to restore since Moore is certainly a worthy recipient of the honor as well.

Good: Someone who actually deserves to be honored and remembered.

I have long thought that when forts were named for Confederate generals as a “reconciliation” measure it was actually a not-so-subtle poke in the eye to also pick some of those who had been among the least competent of southern officers.

Sigfreund: I thought the name change back, but honoring a hero of WW II, was a genius move.
Roland Bragg was an infantryman; now every infantryman who goes through Fort Bragg has a real-life model to encourage (in the literal sense) them.

US Military installations should be named for US servicemen.

I hope all the secretaries didn't throw out all the old stationary after the switch to Liberty.

Same for me. When it comes up I always say Jump School at Benning, then to Bragg.

Benning is sure enough iconic, but Hal Moore is a true warrior. Fort Liberty could have easily been named Camp Twinkeefartsprinkles and wouldn’t have been any worse.

I had always thought it was done to appease the local population of these Southern states to secure the land to build the bases on.

This was genius to rename it back to Bragg based on some other Bragg. Trump has outsmarted the other side again. Braxton Bragg was a terrible general, hated by his men, and only maintained his position because he was Jefferson Davis's room mate at West Point. I like this name change!

That's good news...I was hoping under President Trump all the bases would return to their original names like FT Bragg, FT Lee and others.

I'd have been fine with changing Bragg to Benavidez but, finding another hero named Bragg works as well. Army needs to do some updating as there should be more WWII honorariums vice Civil War, Fort Patton, Ridgeway, Bradley, Truscott, Clark, etc...
