By and large modern cars are hideous, soulless exercises in designing angular boxes with wheels.

Case in point. Look at this 1963 Ford Galaxie and how it makes the modern cars around it look God awful and boring. It wasn’t even the best car from its era and yet it still makes everything around it look lame and uninspired. Though I do have to give Ford accolades for making such a beautiful machine. (I’ve always been a big Ford Galaxie fan)

I wish America still made beautiful cars. Sure they make a few lookers but by and large it’s a sad state compared to what was made in the past.

What is your favorite American car from the 1950’s-1970’s?

A near impossible question. But have to go with the Shelby Cobra.

I probably should have asked “what is your favorite American car you owned during that era”.

The Shelby is a solid choice. It would be near the top of my list. Cool

I agree and same with motorcycles, maybe more so IMO.

My car in the early 70's was a 1971 Fiat 124 convertible.

Oops sorry not American. But neither were my motorcycles.

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

LOL When I was in high school in the 70s a very hot girl Dad drove a Ford just like that same color yellow everthing. She was so embarrassed of the Ford she would have Dad drop her off far away.

Agree completely on older cars. Today it is all about aerodynamics and mileage. Every wonder why every crossover looks exactly the same?

Here's what I want -- a '55 Nomad.
I'm even cool with it being orange. Cool

I haven't owned such coolness, but I've driven a couple that belonged to friends:
- a 1968 Dodge Charger, dark green and black, unfortunately without the six-pack. (A friend of his actually had the six-pack on his red '68.)
- a 1966 Impala convertible, banana-pudding yellow.

My neighbor has a couple of '65 Mustangs and an old Camaro (I'm ashamed I don't know its year).

God bless America.

Did Jan and Dean have a song about the Nomad? Maybe it was the Beach Boys.

My sister's fabulous 1962 Caddy convertible was a marvelous learn-to-drive mobile. Easily a city block long & rode like an aircraft carrier.

And I liked the features & styling of the entire Studebaker garage. Some more than others.

Even in those days I preferred the pick-ups & small panel trucks to any of the 'cars'.

Although my older brother's 1959 Ford Convertible was pleasing in many ways, there was little from a drivers standpoint to recommend it. At 75 on the freeway with the top down there was a certain appeal.

Favorite actually-had-one car of the era specified, was a non-USA 1961 Kharmann Ghia convertible.

Didn't have anything from that era that ran. Sold it to someone who could afford to fix it the way it should be.

I still have a dwell meter, choke angle gauge, oscilloscope, headlight aiming kit, etc... that I can work with, but nothing of mine to use it on.

Question is, did everybody think that the newer cars back then were bland as well?
