I'm in Northern California and everyone trick-or-treats on Halloween night. I just learned that apparently in some places there is a designated time for trick or treating by local government/tradition on different days.

Had no clue this was a thing. I just assumed kids showed up everywhere dressed up on Halloween.

What do they do where you live?

It's difficult to say here. I don't have kids so don't get information about when (or if) the ToT will happen. My church did a "Trunk or Treat" event last Sunday afternoon, which supports the member's kids and those in the neighborhood. Most of the young children on my street also apparently go somewhere for a party. I'm not sure I'll even try to handle the neighborhood kids since I don't really know when they would come. (In my day, it would be 31 Oct no matter what day it was, but that has changed.)

In our community Trick-or-Treat is usually held on Halloweeen evening, between 6:00 and 8:00 PM, unless it falls on a date which may interfere with a local event, such as a Friday night if local teams are still playing football.

Saturday nights are usually a no-go as well. It just depends on when the actual date falls during the week. This year it will be held on Sunday, the actual date.

Just an observation, when we moved into our present house here in town about 30 years ago, vs living in a rural location a few miles out, we had quite a bit of foot traffic by the little goblins. But, in the past 4 to 5 years the numbers have dropped considerably, likely due to several factors.

I haven't had a trick or treater at my house (live in the city) in over 22 years. Doesn't seem like they want to walk neighborhoods vs going to apartment complexes where its more door to door.

In our old neighborhood we joked about how we were afraid we were going to get thrown out of the neighborhood for not having kids. Everyone else did. Then we had kids and stopped worrying about getting tossed. :-)

Halloween was always on Halloween, and always off the hook. People tended to setup tables in the driveway. I remember more than once getting rid over several hundred pieces of candy, stowing the table and chairs, turning off the lights and heading to town for dinner at a favorite restaurant by seven.

Now we live out in the country and the house is a mile and a half from the front gate. No trick or treaters here. So we take a bottle of wine and some candy and go hang out with our old next door neighbors. It is still off the hook.

We live in the boonies, but there were kids nearby & they used to make the rounds. Now they're all grown & moved away. I still stock up on Halloween candy though.Smile

31 Oct here. Show up here early and, "you'll get nothing and like it!!"

Currently the house next door has two kids and the next one down has passed a basketball team and currently working on a baseball team - they'll all get full sized Snickers / Baby Ruth / M&M packs / etc.

The other disease ridden vermin get the "fun" size candy.

Hard to judge. My doorbell is unhooked. I'm usually hiding in my house and won't answer any knocks on the door.

Kiddos will start showing up here at around 5:30, I imagine.

I enjoy it. We have friends over, move the patio fireplace to the front yard, put out some lawn chairs, and hand out candy from there.

Cool

God bless America.

Always the night of the 31st; some of the younger kiddos might start as early as 4:30. Mostly over with by 8pm or so.

My location is a developed subdivision ( 600 homes) that people from all over the area would come and clog the streets with parking where ever they pleased even to the point of using peoples yards and driveways. These clogs were bad enough that emergency vehicles could not have gained entrance if a emergency had required a response. Word got out that you could and would be towed. Yes I did call the tow truck on several cars as we lived just inside the main entrance. For the last several years things have quietened down substantually and we keep the house dark so no customers. Now this holiday a problem has come up again because the parish (county) has ruled that Saturday would be observed but two local cities have ruled it to be Sunday inside the city limits. Now we have a problem as the HOA is upset because we are outside the city limits which means Saturday but some residents are claiming to do Sunday celebrating. Now all of our candy is what we personally prefer to have for ourselves. ................................... drill sgt.

Your post reminds me of a funny story. At the age of 6 we had just moved to northern Indiana we were renting a farm house. We were a family of six kids and we were all going to make our Halloween candy haul. Oct31 it was a lot like this year on a Sunday night. We got to town all dressed up to be scary. I thought man we beat every one to the punch and are the first to hit the streets. First door with lights on was the kick in a young first grader’s shorts. We rang the door bell when the older gentleman answered we all yelled “Trick or Treat”. He was surprised at first, I thought man my costume must have really scared him……then he started laughing, I thought wow my sister’s ballerina costume must have caught his eye…my sister was heavy set as an 8 yr old. He told his wife to come and look at us all. She came to the front door and said “ OH MY!” As her husband was laughing she took on the task of telling six kids at her front door that they missed Trick or Treating by one night. What the H ! We missed it… she felt sorry for us and gave what ever she had left of her bowl of candy. We walked back to the car sulking and wondering how could our mother miss guide us! That was the first time I found that others don’t celebrate Halloween on Oct 31st.

I live in "defacto" base/post housing...

Most of the folks in the subdivision are active duty 77th Special Forces/USAF Spec Ops or retired.

And we get a lot of "drive ins" (Soccer mom infiltration).

But, I like little kids (that go home...).

I've got a bowl of leftover condiment packs ready to go. Ketchup packs, mustard packs, mayo, taco, relish, Arbys Horsey Sauce, soy sauce and hot mustard packs, etc. I really do, but I'm not going to give it to the kids. That's for my obnoxious dear friends who will pop over. I save that stuff all year long.

There may, or may not be, a few condoms for the "kids" who are way too old to be trick or treating, you know, those who have a deep voice, 6 plus feet tall, can bang the shit out of the front door, and should not be out trick or treating. I'll drop in a few pieces of candy in their sack along with a condom, they'll never realize it til later. LOL.

I do have a bowl of the airplane travel little bottles of various liquors. I hide these back, and only present that to the adults who look tired and frazzled, I make a judgment call if I think it will be well received and welcomed. You'd be surprised how many of those I give out to the parents and grandparents. They are discretely palmed over to them. They're ALWAYS grateful!

And yes, I do have a big plastic pumpkin bowl full to the brim with the contents of 2 of the huge bags of candy you get at Costco or Sams for the kiddos.
