Regarding the last few years of SNL - he's right. Too much PC and political agendas injected into EVERYTHING. It's just not funny.

Colin Jost and Michael Che’s rapport on “Saturday Night Live’s” “Weekend Update” may have scored them the hosting gig at the 70th Emmy Awards, but the pair can’t count their “SNL” predecessor Chevy Chase as a fan.

Chase was part of the original “SNL” cast that debuted in 1975 and established the “Update” segment, but he didn’t have kind words for the current show, now approaching its 44th season.

“I’m amazed that Lorne [Michaels] has gone so low. I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t f—ing believe it,” Chase told the Washington Post. “That means a whole generation of s—heads laughs at the worst f—ing humor in the world. You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse s— than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts.”

It’s not just the current cast that Chase criticized — he hasn’t liked most of the most seasons of “SNL.”

“I’d have to say, that after the first two years, it went downhill,” Chase said. “Why am I saying that? Because I was in it? I guess. That’s a horrible thing to say. But certainly I never had more fun. I really loved it and enjoyed it. I didn’t see the same fun thing happening to the cast the next year.”

This is the second time that Chase has criticized the show recently. On an episode of Netflix’s “Norm Macdonald Has a Show,” the 74-year-old specifically called out the lackluster reading of the show’s catchphrase, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night.”

“I mean it just gets so bad,” Chase said about the delivery. “It seems like some guys are out there just to be the guy who says, ‘Live from New York,’ and then does it poorly. Anyway, that’s not nice of me to say, but…f— ’em.”

Some previous coworkers of the star of classic comedy films like “Caddyshack” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” haven’t exactly had glowing things to say about Chase, either. Former “SNL” cast member Terry Sweeney called him a “monster,” while his one-time “Community” co-star Donald Glover said Chase told him, “People think you’re funnier because you’re black.”

Despite all the animosity toward the show that launched his career, Chase still has hopes to return to Studio 8H.

He appeared on the show’s 40th anniversary special in 2015, and even asked “SNL” creator and producer Michaels if he could host. And last November, Chase only had good things to say about late castmates John Belushi and Gilda Radner, and his memories at “SNL.”

“I can’t tell you, to be up there, on that stage, doing that stuff,” Chase said. “Oh, God, it was fun. I’ll tell you, I’d do it again in a minute.”

I do not disagree with his opinion. However he is a very caustic disagreeable individual from what I have heard. I frankly feel that his opinion is irrelevant.

He's right, IMO. SNL used to be funny. The cast and writers used to know how to lampoon people w/o coming across as angry, bitter and condescending.

It's like The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. Biting political satire, but still funny. Those of you who missed Pat Paulsen don't know what you missed

I have heard that he can be an asshole, so I was interested in reading the Post article. Lots of pros and cons in it but the bottom line for me is that he's been married to the same woman for 36 years and apparently, she still loves him. That's the best review he could get.

No they aren’t.

It’s all anti- Trump bullshit now. Literally 90% of the show

I had faithfully watched since 1986 or so but gave up halfway through 2017 in utter disgust.

First few years of SNL were great, then next few years, ok, then a few funny moments during a somewhat boring show, then....they just beat every "funny" moment to death, nothing original. I could write for the damn show now.

Every so often i try to watch it, and turn if off in less than 5 min.

I was a big fan of the show during the first 4 seasons, pretty much coinciding with my high school years. The first season I only watched sporadically, I remember some of the Buck Henry episodes (my favorite guest), and musical guests like Patti Smith and Gordon Lightfoot. It peaked in the 4th season; Animal House came out, Blues Brothers were touring with Steve Martin to support their album, and SNL was the hottest show on TV. I remember going to big parties and the action would stop at 11:30pm, everyone basically crowding around the TV to watch SNL. After that season, I pretty much stopped watching, only tuning in occasionally to see a musical guest. The last SNL I watched all the way through was in the mid 80s when Harry Dean Stanton was host and The Replacements were musical guests. I have never really seen the Will Farrell years, the Chris Farley ones, etc.

I have not seen one minute of SNL in perhaps the last 25 years

Yep.
It started long before Trump. SNL used to be funny. Johnny Carson was funny.
They could make fun of politics and politicians without being political themselves.

There's another element as well. Before the Left took over everything in our culture and PC become the law of the land we could make fun of people based on all sorts of stereotypes including race and sex. You can't get away with being funny anymore. It'll get you fired, or worse.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

he's not the only one unhappy

SNL was great for the first 2 or 3 years and then it became progressively less funny as time went on

nothing new, nothing original, readers saying lines, little original thinking

with so many dullards claiming to be 'comedians' and getting face time on TV, its no wonder that the idea of SNL comedy has been diluted to vitriol parody of your political opponent
