At that time SNL was really the only such game in town -- hipster, stoner, slacker. Because it was for US, we were the only ones allowed to truly get it. With everyone glued to their tv's, I began to ask myself is it really that funny or just in with the in-crowd? I decided SNL was pretty funny but not worthy of it's special reputation.

I stopped watching years ago but think SNL is marginally the same humor level as its always been, still preaching to the choir. I don't look back at the golden years as particularly legendary, far from consistently epic. Many great moments over the years, not worth the effort slogging through the dreck.
