Cummins Diesel Conversion for Jeep Wrangler
are we celebrating 'Ford reliability' or 'diesel reliability' here?

As for a diesel in my own JK, no thanks.

The EPA is why. Their mandates on diesel fuel sulfur content. It used to be low sulfur diesel for the street, now it's Ultra low sulfur which drives the price way up (refining process). That and taxes.

I buy lots and lots of offroad diesel (which used to be high sulfur and is now low sulfer but not ultra low) and I'm paying $1.90-$2 a gallon for it. (Usually 500-1000 gallon quanitities.

It more than just the EPA low sulfur mandate. A barrel of crude oil, when refined, produces less gallons of diesel than it can of gasoline. That's just chemistry.

Your off-road diesel is a lot cheaper because you don't pay state and federal road taxes for it.

And offroad is refined less and there's more of it. I still pay marine taxes on the offroad and sales tax.....but the fact I'm getting it for $1.95 per gallon with the marine tax included plus 6% tax, and the diesel price on the street right now is around $2.89 a gallon for USLD tells you a lot.

Off Road is not refined less. It's simply not taxed the same, and is dyed to show it. We run it every day in 700hp Cat Tier 4 engines.

The diesel engine doesn't screw up the balance either. It's about the same weight as the 4.0. About 500 lbs.

Yeah, but then again, the 4.0 is a boat anchor. I can't wait till mine lets go and I have an excuse to replace it with something I hate less.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

^^ Agreed. I had the same opinion of my '06. I sold it, but, for me, the replacement was going to be a Gm 5.3. A serious upgrade for not a lot of money.
