Dammit! We haven't been to see a single win this year and now I find out I missed Bruce's shutout against the Yard Goats on Tuesday. Red Face

Planning on seeing them on Monday (vs. Yard Goats again), so let's hope Bruce is pitching and goes for a repeat! We need to see a win. Mrs.BurtonRW is losing interest.

Orioles minor league recap 6/29: Bruce Zimmermann keeps rolling for Bowie

Bowie Baysox 3, Akron Rubberducks 2

In a very close matchup on Friday night, Rylan Bannon hit his fifth home run of the year for Bowie, a solo shot in the sixth inning that served as the go-ahead run. He’s now hitting .270 with a .754 OPS. Unfortunately, the Baysox had a rough night on the bases, getting caught stealing twice. The culprits were Ryan McKenna and Chris Clare. But on the plus side, McKenna was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Local kid Bruce Zimmermann got his third win of the season, allowing two runs over six innings. The rest of his pitching line included five hits, two walks and six strikeouts. His ERA stands at a tidy 2.75. Zach Muckenhirn pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to get the hold and Cristian Alvarado threw 1.1 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the year.

It looks like Bruce will be pulled up to AAA with the Norfolk Tides this weekend. He will likely pitch on Sunday.

I just shake my head at the raw talent and it's such a fine line between the minors and "The Show". So what would it take for Bruce to get called up to The Show?

It'll depend where they think he fits and where their needs are: starting pitcher, relief pitcher, middle reliever, lefty specialist, setup man, or a closer.

But at least an ERA around 2. A couple of handful or more of 6 innings and getting more complete games under his belt. Stat-wise it'll be about keeping his WHIP and SO-to-BB ratios intact.

It's a big jump from AA to AAA. He's up against MLB quality players looking for their shot.

Good luck!

If he begins to get frustrated have him watch video of Cole Hamels from last night's game against the Philly's. Cole gave up 11 runs in three innings, most of them earned. Even the big names stumble occasionally. Tell him to keep grinding.

Cole Hamels helped put the Cardinals back into a tie (with the Cubs) for first...
Big Grin

Hamels received a hero's welcome back to Philadelphia, then promptly got rocked, failing to record an out in the bottom of the third inning while giving up nine hits and two walks as the Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 11-1. The standing ovation Hamels received when he came to the plate in the top of the third didn't feel so great after he gave up four runs.

Awesome last night against his old parent club the Braves AAA Gwinnet!

Zimmermann, Tides sink Stripers Tuesday

Norfolk got home runs from Ryan Mountcastle and Jose Rondon and a strong start from Bruce Zimmermann in a 5-1 win over the Gwinnett Stripers Tuesday night at Harbor Park.

Zimmermann (1-2) picked up his first Triple-A victory in the contest, as he allowed one run on five hits over seven innings of work. The 24-year-old left-hander, who was originally drafted by Atlanta in 2017 out of Mount Olive College in North Carolina, needed just 88 pitches to navigate his outing against his former organization. He struck out five and walked one to help pitch the Tides to their second straight win and their seventh win in their last 10 contests.

I damned well expect to see him on the Orioles roster next season. I’m tired of “rebuilding years” when we have this kind of talent in our (actually) very good and dynamic farm system.

Just read an interview with O’s GM Mike Elias on masnsports.com. He spoke highly of Bruce Zimmerman and his performance with the AAA club. Sounds like he might get called up next season, if he keeps pitching well.

We could have really used Bruce last night!

Baysox are playing for the Eastern League Championship. Best of 5 series against Trenton. The first two were in Trenton and we came back home last night, tied 1-1.

Mrs.BurtonRW and I were at the game, of course, and it was ridiculously frustrating.

Both teams were playing pretty well. Trenton got lucky w/ a HR in the top of the 2d. Fortunately, they didn't have anyone on base, so it stayed 1-0 until we answered with an RBI double in the bottom of the 5th to tie things up. Nobody was really making a lot of progress.

Then came the top of the 7th. Our starting pitcher (some jackass named Wells) was still on the mound and managed to let them load the bases with a couple of walks and a single. No outs. With no outs, I figured they'd hit another single or two before it was over and run up the score. But Wells started to dial it in and struck out the next two batters. Third batter up. Strike one, strike two... at this point, we're all on our feet going nuts because we thought we were about to see the end of the game, so-to-speak, but now it looked like we were going to make them strand all three runners.

At that moment, before the final pitch, Wells... that stupid bastard... must have been watching a butterfly or something. He just sort of zoned out and started staring over at the runner on first. No idea why. The bases were loaded. The only one who could move was the guy on 3rd, and he had been taking HUGE leads the whole time. He saw Wells paying ZERO attention and stole home.

That's right. Tie game, top of the freaking 7th, bases loaded with 2 outs and 2 strikes on the board, and our pitcher (who was right handed, so facing the 3rd base line, BTW), does NOTHING while the runner on 3rd STEALS HOME.

The next pitch was the 3rd strike and the inning was over.

What really irritated me was that they left the jackass on the mound for the rest of the game. If I were the coach (or GM for that matter), I'd have made him run laps behind the outfield fence for the rest of the night and then started the phone calls to bust him down to single-A for next season. If I wanted to see that level of play, I'm sure I could find a t-ball game somewhere.

Mrs.BurtonRW and I left after the 8th inning so we wouldn't have to watch it. Final score was 2-1 and now Trenton leads the series 2-1, playing for the championship tonight.

Yep - we really could have used Bruce.

Orioles prospect season in review: Bruce Zimmermann

The left-hander bounced back from a disappointing debut in the Orioles system last year to put together an impressive season between Bowie and Norfolk. He now finds himself on the doorstep of the big leagues.

The Orioles farm system improved by leaps and bounds during general manager Mike Elias’s first season in charge of the club. Exciting new talent was added to the organization and many of the young players that were already in place saw a boost to their performance. One of those pre-Elias players was left-handed pitcher Bruce Zimmermann.

Zimmermann is a Baltimore native that has only been in the O’s system for a little over a year. He was traded to his hometown team at the 2018 trade deadline in a swap with the Braves that sent Kevin Gausman and Darren O’Day to Atlanta in exchange for Evan Phillips, Jean Carlos Encarnacion, Brett Cumberland and Zimmermann.

The former fifth round pick out of the University of Mount Olive was regarded as one of the less interesting prospects in the deal. Zimmermann’s arsenal includes a high-80’s fastball to go with a slider, change-up and curveball. The word often used to describe him is “pitchability” due to his pinpoint control paired with less-than-stellar stuff.

Here is his scouting report from 2080 Baseball, dated February 12, 2019:

He’s the type of pitching prospect who generally hits a ceiling against more advanced competition. The lefty pounds the zone with a four-pitch mix, sitting in the high-80s with his fastball and topping out at 91 mph. His slider and changeup are fringy (but usable) offerings, and he’ll mix a lollipop curve at times for another look. Zimmermann could wind up a high-minors depth starter, but the pitchability and guile give him a chance at a long relief role in the big leagues.

Zimmermann struggled in his first taste of action with the Orioles in 2018. Over 21.1 innings, all with Double-A Bowie, the southpaw had a 5.06 ERA, a 1.50 WHIP, a .287 batting average against, struck out 16 and walked seven. It was not a surprising outcome. He had started the 2018 season in High-A with the Braves and had only tossed 28.2 innings with their Double-A affiliate before the move. It can take some time to adjust to the level.

The 24-year-old returned to Bowie to begin 2019 and looked like a completely different pitcher. Over 101.1 innings, Zimmermann had just a 2.58 ERA and a .227 batting average against. He also struck out 101.1 batters, walked 24 and had a 1.20 WHIP. Across the board, Zimmermann saw improvement to his game. That is exactly what a team hopes to have happen when sending a player back to a level where they already have experience.

Zimmermann did so well that the Orioles rewarded him with a promotion to Triple-A Norfolk at the end of July. While there, his numbers began to revert back to what was showing up at Bowie in 2018. In 38.2 innings, he had a 4.89 ERA, .291 batting average against and 1.60 WHIP.

There is almost no information available on what Zimmermann is doing differently, if anything, this season. He is the type of pitcher that may simply need to learn about a league and its hitters in order to see improvement on the stat sheet.

[EDIT 8:39 a.m. ET: According to Luke Siler of Orioles Hangout, Zimmerman worked hard in the off-season to increase his velocity. As a result, he has worked in the low 90’s and touched 95 this season. In addition, his slider has improved as well. Follow Luke on Twitter @The_Luke_Siler]

The Loyola Blakefield product is a legitimate prospect, but you won’t find him on the well-known lists at MLB Pipeline or Fangraphs. That’s not because he has no shot at making the big leagues, but rather because his ceiling still remains rather conservative when compared to some of the other young players in the organization. Given that he has made it to Triple-A, he will almost certainly make it to the big league in some way. How long he sticks around and what role he will have once there remains up for debate.

The Orioles have a similar pitching prospect elsewhere in the system in fellow lefty Alex Wells. He attacks hitters with a similar pitch mix to Zimmermann, but the difference is control. Zimmermann has good control; Wells has elite control. For hurlers that have middling velocity, that could make all of the difference.

Zimmermann may get an invite to big league spring training in February simply because there are so few major league ready arms in the organization. But in all likelihood he will return to Norfolk in order to refine his approach with the plan of him making his Baltimore debut at some point in 2020 as a spot starter or swing-man out of the bullpen.

It’s possible that if Zimmermann proves himself at the highest level of minor league baseball that he could re-emerge on those national prospect lists. But it won’t matter if he doesn’t. The Orioles have developed him into, at the very least, a quality depth piece in the minor leagues. As seen with the big league club’s pitching this season, that has been area of need all summer long.
