Another vote for Bosch.

Ours is now 6 years old and we love it.

My parents had the same one for 20+ years.

They're great.

We have had Bosches in several houses in the past. In our current residence the Bosch does not get the dishes really clean. I think next time we will buy a domestic brand, such as the Maytag mentioned by Appliance Brad.
Thanks for returning to your role as appliance whisperer, Brad.

I bought a GE model #GNE25JYKFS for $578 and installed it myself. Also bought and installed one for my mom. I replaced our 22 year old Whirlpool with it and this GE is so quiet you can barely hear it running and also does a good job cleaning. I got it at Home Depot.

Going by conversations with repairmen that I know, there is no universally good brand for all appliances. For example, LG seems to make a good front load washer but they're terrible with refrigerators. Samsung makes a good dishwasher but not washing machines.

Just looking at dishwashers, the conventional "internet wisdom" (i.e. repair blogs, Consumer Reports, etc.) seems to lean Bosch, Miele, and Samsung. If you go with Bosch or Miele, make sure somebody around you will service them if things go wrong.

I also recommend doing your own installation if you're mechanically inclined, or at least not letting the Lowes/HD/Menards folks install it. If everything goes smoothly, they are fine. But if you run into issues (and don't you always), you'll want somebody better. My last dishwasher replacement involved me having to redo all of the supports for my granite countertops to provide clearance for the new machine. The specs said it was the same size as the old, but it wouldn't clear the counter braces. No way would I have trusted a box store delivery person to work on that.

About six months ago, I installed this very one recommended by Brad. So far, very happy. Quiet and cleans well.

We had a Kitchen Aid at prior house for 12 years that was solid, current house for 8 year plus 4 before us, and installed one in our retirement home as well.

Last one is within 1 or 2 decibels of a Bosch, cleans GREAT and I expect to work out just as well. Very well laid out also.

We have a Bosch 800 and love it. Our previous was a GE and it only lasted 4 years. Bosch is 1 year old, quiet and actually dries plastic. Cry once.

The top quality are Miele and Bosch.

We bought the Miele on the rack setup.

It is so quiet you have to look at the lights to know if its running.

Our Kitchenaid lasted decades.

My 2004 Maytag is still going strong. One service visit for a recall about 15 years ago. I'd buy another Maytag if it craps out.

After three previous Maytags, we are going on our 10th year with the Bosch. Our next dishwasher will be a Bosch hands down. Dishes always clean, whisper quiet, and no malfunctions.

Yea, the Lowes/Home Depot "installers" aren't really qualified for installation. The sales staff says they will install, but they don't really do it, it's some kind of stupid play on words. The last two appliances I bought from Lowes I installed myself, though I would have preferred someone actually qualified to do the job properly.

Fortunately I have used a very well qualified independent appliance man twice over the years, but he is expensive. Worth if if you need it, since paying for a bad install is the worst.

Probably going this way too. I've read some comments online about faulty water inlet valves, but not sure how common the problem is. I'll be installing it myself, I've done a few at other houses without issue (so far). Thank you all again for your suggestions.

I would have agreed until we bought a Miele with the top/third tray. I wanted a silverware basket. Salesman said “sure Miele makes one as an accessory. I can sell it to you now, or you can try it for a month without the basket and if you still want it I’ll give it to you.” We don’t have a basket.

Stainless interior. Third tray. Not Asian.

On Brad’s list I would go one step up to the Maytag MDB8959SKZ.

Thanks for this thread. I've got a 20+ year-old Frigidaire that still works great except for a mouse problem. Little bastards chewed the plastic on the door that meets the seal and now it leaks.

I can get a replacement door but it'll cost around $200 so I figure take that money and put it towards a new dishwasher - with a stainless door this time. Today I'm going to look at the Maytags recommended here.

I'm probably a bit late. We picked a 3-tier KitchenAid for a 2020 remodel. We skipped Bosch because they didn't offer heated drying anymore. Previously we had a GE profile for 15 years.

If have any odd shaped dishes/bowls you use frequently, take them with you. We have very deep and narrow cereal bowls, from a 16-person set we received as a remodel gift from my parents. Theses would not fit any other manufactuerers we tried.
