After 13 years I’m staring over at a new job. The last place was toxic as hell and getting worse all the time.

Just wanted to share with the digital family. Karma of some sort will be happening soon. Big Grin

Watch the Shawshank Redemption, it’s pretty close and the prison sex luckily was figurative for me.

You'll be re-tarring the roof of the local prison? Good luck!

Way to kick ass Leemur! I've always held the opinion that if your job sucks, life pretty much sucks. It is hard as hell to move out of a job that is safe yet the work sucks. I'm very happy for you.

Hope it goes much better than the last job.
Would take a lot of guts to quit one job and try going for a new one.

Good Luck.

I started working at the local Walmart distribution center in January 2006. At the time the pay was ridiculous and it was like working with family and friends. The pay is still ridiculous for the intelligence (or lack thereof) required for most of the jobs. Management was involved in helping achieve goals. Sam Walton’s beliefs were still in effect. Respect, listening to ground level employees, etc.

One year before I was to be fully vested in the profit sharing (which was heavily hyped upon employment) they got rid of that program.

I was a backup in the IT dept. It got me nowhere and resulted in me being used when it was convenient but no extra compensation and at the expense of me being able to make my production goals.

I earned the maximum sick time because I never had a medical/life emergency which required me to use it. They changed the program to make it impossible to use and froze the personal time I’d been accumulating as a result of maxing out the sick time.

They took away our lunch break on a 12 hour shift. The explanation was that they wanted us to spend more time with our families. At the same time they started requiring us to work 13 to 14 hour days.

Mandatory overtime was a constant requirement. You had to come in on a day off and for me it was often an overnight shift which completely screwed up my week. If you were a single parent and couldn’t arrange a sitter for a child you took a hit for an unexcused absence.

The change to the paid time off policy rolled out last month increased the amount of time worked per hour of paid time earned. It also extended by another year the tenure required to start earning paid time at am increased rate. I could earn 224 hours paid time off per year. Under the new rate, if we worked a full schedule all year I would earn a maximum of 201 hours. The next 23 hours would have to be earned by working over 210 hours of overtime.

The attendance policy was changed in such a way that if you had to call out for a week you’d be one day from being fired. Current figures suggest that FMLA/LOA requests are being denied at at least a 50% rate over the past year.

The attendance policy is also being used to reduce or eliminate quarterly incentive payouts. If I were to miss four days of work for any reason (legit or otherwise) I would receive no incentive bonus for six months. The incentive is based on hours worked so it was already reduced if you worked fewer hours, now one bad week robs you of nearly $1000.

In our DC, there is not one single manager that knows the jobs in the departments which they run. Policies, procedures and production figures are arbitrarily assigned by people that don’t know what it takes to do the job.

Last year I was made a team leader for my job description. Basically, I was a manager in all but name and pay. I instituted policies that increased productivity, efficiency and job satisfaction. This year I was told everything I put in place was wrong and the old systems were put in place over what I had done.

There are more minor issues that I won’t even bother addressing. It’s a toxic clustrfuck of a nightmare. It’s so bad that the turnover rate hit over 60% several months last year. It’s simultaneously the best and worst place I have worked in over 35 years. Walmart’s best days are behind them and short of a miracle they’ll be the next Sears. The stock price is through the roof right now but based on what I’ve see it’s built on a foundation of lies. Amazon is kicking their asses and their panic mode reaction is destroying the foundations of the company.

WOW. I'm sorry to hear that! It sounds like just about ANY job would be better than working in that mess of a situation. I know it's too early to tell being the first day and all, but how do you like the new place so far?
