It's a scam. He "runs" and promises plenty of free shit. Donations to the campaign come in. He quits and can keep the campaign money by paying tax or other no tax strategies. That's why so many of them are running. They don't give a shit, its a good shot to make some decent coin for doing little or nothing. A racket or side hustle. A little fame is a side benefit, maybe a decent .gov job down the line.

he's right, about the effect student loan debt has. He's wrong about the solution, we have the answer to his problem, but people don't want to hear it, and frankly I'm tired of defending it.

so I'm going to be blunt, fuck you boomers for pushing college on every god damned teenager walking the earth. These children have no concept of money or value and have no idea the shit show of a path you've decided to send them down. Your shit parenting and leadership of society has doomed us all.

Go ahead attack the only decision I made at 18 that was universally supported by every adult in my life at that time; please. Tell me I was wrong for trusting you.

Fender, there is much wisdom in what you write, but the people at fault will never acknowledge it. The game has changed so much since they were in school, but they not only fail to see it, but worse still they still push and incentivize their offspring to go to college.

It’s not the 1970’s or 1980’s anymore, with a strong domestic manufacturing economy, a nascent computer boom, and a dearth of foreign competition. Nowadays, every 20 year old from Bangkok to Bogota is a competitor for intellectual work, and a flood of legal and illegal immigrants have made physical labor employment damn near worthless for huge swaths of the US.

Personally, I’d make colleges and universities be the physical guarantors of student loan debt for their graduates, with a max 10 year payoff, capped at x% of the average salary for their major at that school.

Let's assume you do this. What happens to the kids just entering college that year? Does everyone now just get to go for free as well? Or do the new students have to continue to take out loans while all the historical loans are forgiven?

The solution for everything impacting this country is always the opposite of what the leftist Dem's want.

Step one to addressing the student loan nonsense is a culture/societal change....College is not a right because you're breathing and upright. Next, the only young people receiving 'private' (i.e. not government) funding for college are those who have earned it through their academic achievements (i.e. don't give a damn about your race, gender, or color), and who are pursuing degree programs with a documented/demonstrated need to the country as a whole (i.e if you're a women's studies major, you need not apply for a loan). Once we make sure only the 'right' kids are headed to college, then we can focus on the next step in curing the current problem.

so you vilify a whole generation for a decision that you now regret. I didn't tell you to do it so go fuck yourself back, or go to your room until you can act like an adult and take responsibility for your own life-your choice.

Not exactly a new strategy, lying to the young about college that is. I have a good friend who, now older and conservative, shamefully voted for Bill Clinton because of promises of cheaper, perhaps free college. I like to tease him about it now and then.

For all of us here who are against this, the question is now many are willing to actively fight it, and how hard?

There are 44 million people who owe on college loans in this country. While some of those might oppose forgiveness on moral grounds, I bet the majority of them will support it, and with some level of vigor.

I didn't get a student loan. I got a job and worked my way to the American Dream.

Since the government doesn't have a student loan of mine to pay, hows about I get a loan on a new Hellcat and let them pay that one off instead?

Exactly!
Well, at least a ban on government involvement in student loans. Wink
And while we're at it... get the .gov out of health care and health insurance too!

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Damn straight! Ease of govt loans is the reason why tuition has skyrocketed.

The current US debt is at a staggering $22 TRILLION dollars.

To the selfish people who want to be forgiven of their school debt, think of how many generations it would take to pay it off if we could stop it at that amount.

I went to college and had a job to pay my costs. I owed nothing when I got out. Foolish socialistic promises of more free sh*t costs all of us.

If people would mind their own damn business this country would be better off. I owe no one an explanation or an apology for my personal opinion.

However, something HAS to be done about the cost of education as a whole. In the 60’s/70’s/80’s, you could work your way through most 4 year institutions and graduate with little to no debt, and even if you didn’t the debt load was quite easily paid through a combination of good employment possibilities and inflation.

By this point next year, my spouse and I will have paid $400k in student loans completely off, in 5 years post masters completion. In that time, we have not saved anything for retirement, for a future house, or really spent any money other than food and necessary transportation.

With a child, what this means is that we will not contribute anything to the economy in terms of spending until we are 50 or so, (mid-30’s now), which is fine for us but not so great for the economy as a whole.

And I completely echo what Arc said... fuck ‘em

Really simple solution to the college tuition expense problem: make all student loans going forward dischargeable in bankruptcy and get the fed.gov out of the student loan industry. Every future student loan would be made by loan officers who are risking their employer's own money. They will look into whether or not a given field of study results in employment, how much the student will be paid, the student's grades in high school, and will follow the student's educational career closely, making sure their investment is a good one and cutting off funding when the risk outweighs the reward. Schools will respond in kind by adjusting the prices levied for various fields of study and classes.

People who are already up to their eyeballs in student debt need to repay it. No free lunch for them.

Thank you President Trump.

I keep saying this, get colleges to co-sign federal student loans, it's not a perfect fix but certainly better than what's going on now; also tax endowment funds.
