presumed lost at sea near Japan was found on board hiding in one of the ship’s engine rooms, Pentagon officials confirmed to Fox News.

The sailor, who works on the USS Shiloh, was found over a week after he was reported missing, triggering a wide-ranging search-and-rescue effort that stretched over 50 hours.

A Pentagon official tells Fox News Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Peter Mims is expected to be flown off the ship and given a full medical and psychological evaluation.

"We are thankful to have found our missing shipmate and appreciate all the hard work of our sailors and Japanese partners in searching for him," Rear Adm. Charles Williams, commander of Carrier Strike Group 5 and Task Force 70, said in a statement posted on the 7th Fleet website.

"I am relieved that this sailor's family will not be joining the ranks of Gold Star Families that have sacrificed so much for our country," he added.

USS Shiloh (CG-67) arrived in the country on Friday to replenish supplies and strengthen ties with the Philippines through outreach programs as part of routine port call, the U.S. embassy in Manila said in a statement. Mims was reported missing June 8, sparking a wide ocean search. The search was suspended on midnight June 11, but the crew of the Shiloh continued their search on board the vessel.

Japanese Coast Guard assisted in the search that combed more than 5,500 square miles of water off Japan.

It's unclear why Mims was hiding in the ship's engine room and how he survived a week there.

According to information released by the Navy, Mims joined the service in February 2014 and had served aboard the Shiloh since August 2014. His awards included the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

That's weird.

One can't just hide for 5 days without food and water. Was someone else aiding and abetting?

Served aboard 4 ships and have just under 12 years at sea. That's just about all I need to know about Gas Turbine Systems Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Mims.

Sea story: Overseas and inport, a new junior sailor reported aboard. Underway at speed the next day and suddenly the new guy just runs down the fantail and jumps over the stern. Aft lookout was all over it and the guy was recovered quickly. Good thing because he was fully clothed. SAR swimmer said he almost lost him. He was confined under 24 hr watch until taken off and given a full medical and psychological evaluation. Some said he just couldn't handle being on a Navy warship. Who knows.

It's amazing the range and variety of human faults, foibles and failings that surface in the military. From bootcamp thru various schools to deployments, it all surfaces. PO3 Mims will be doing his fair share of answering, as will those who were charged with inspecting those spaces, his LPO, department head, XO and CO.

Most of you guys haven't been in the engine room. But, I don't know how anyone could or would want to hide in one for a month. They're very noisy (needing ear protection) and hot and smelly..... nowhere I'd want to spend anymore time in than I have to. It has to be a mental issue.

On very large ships, there are plenty of places in an engine room that can be quiet and relatively cool. Some spots can be downright cozy. It's also not overly difficult to go unnoticed for a week if you know where to hide.

I'm curious if the Navy personnel ever considered that he might still be onboard or just automatically assumed he must've went overboard. A detailed search of the ship I would've thought would turn him up. Of course, they probably didn't consider that he might actively be hiding from them.

My ex-husband wouldn't hide in the engine room or fake his own death', she said in a statement to ABC News.

'I do feel like the Navy has explaining to do because the event of him going MIA had caused so much distress and sadness.

Roll Eyes

His ex's reaction reminds me of the obligatory "my baby was just getting his life together" statement that a mom or sister makes when their gang-banging son is shot by the police or a citizen protecting themselves.

Ex-wife of sailor denies he was trying to fake his own death

Oh yeah, lady, the Navy "has a lot of explaining to do" for the actions of your ex. Probably, he had to hide because the Navy was trying to kill him, or he found out some super top secret information that would damage the Navy and they were tryng to kill him, or the Captain of the ship said he was going to kill him or maybe somebody was trying to kill him so he had to hide.

Crossing the Atlantic on the way to a med cruise, one of the destroyers in the group found a sailors folded clothes on the fantail one morning. We slowed but didn't turn around, sent out our ASW helicopter. Who knows when in the night he went over, he was not found.

Yeah, they probably searched that area a half dozen times, calling out his name. Who would think the nut-job would be HIDING from searchers on his own ship?

Guy's mental.

LOL

You're onto something....I'ma gonna just put this here now so that I can timestamp it:

Mims is going to hold a press conference stating that he either discovered some type of 'illegal spying' that the ship was part of, or that he was being bullied to the point of faking his own death. So in the spirit of his idols Edward Snowden and Bowe Bergdahl, he did his 'duty' and hid out...waiting to get back on land again so that he could publicly disclose the misdeeds that he had discovered.

One day at sea, while cruising the Tonkin Gulf, a young Radioman sat down on the deck outside the door to the radio room. Just sat.

First, the petty officers were asking WTF. Then the Cheif was giving orders to stand up and turn to. Had to step over him to get to Ops & Nav. Then the officers took a crack at it. He refused to speak or move. They let him stew there a couple of days then snatched him up and strapped him down in Sick Bay.

Finally returned to Subic Bay and they took him off in a straight jacket. As far as I know, he never spoke to anyone while aboard. Never saw him again. I guess he a hard time adjusting to sea service or the military.
