Somewhere in the south Pacific, steaming in the area around Indonesia, we had a sailor calmly sit down on the deck edge of the hangar deck to remove his boondockers. He then proceeded to walk back to the middle of the hangar deck and take a running start/flying leap off the deck edge. The plane guard helo fished him out of the water. His plan had been to swim to the island on the horizon which he thought was about a mile away but which in actually was about 12-15 miles. I don't think he would have made it. He would have been shark bait in those waters.

Rear Adm. Charles Williams, commander of Carrier Strike Group 5 and Task Force 70, said in a highly sanitized press release. His other comments could not be printed because the paper kept combusting. “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.” - John Adams

I'm guessing he had food and water in a backpack or something with him. There are also typically water fountains and sinks scattered throughout the engineroom. And you know, it wouldn't be the first time I've heard of a sailor peeing or crapping in the bilge...Seriously. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

We had a dumb ass go over the side coming out of Pearl in 1972. One of the lookouts saw him jump and immediately notified the bridge. I was amazed at how fast the old Truxton could do a U'ie. I was in the aft engine room when the gong sounded. They fished the D.A. Out, beat the shit out of him and he was off when we got to Subic. Except for Navy personnel assigned to nuclear submarines, there is very little psychological screening that takes place. There are a fairly large number of people discharged medically for these sorts of issues. Of course I have no knowledge of this situation, but it is a likely scenario given the facts available.

We had a guy like that in boot camp, he got nine square feet on the quarterdeck for six or seven weeks...fire watch had to bring him food and escort him to the head, then one day, boom gone. Later the CC just got fed up with him and shipped him off to the head shrinker "Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.” Robert A. Must have had a big backpack. You know how many sailors are in the ER of a Navy ship. To stay hidden, I would think he'd have to stay in his crib.
